Non-'tactical' TIR thrower

I’m sure this question comes up often. My only semi-thrower is Sofirn IF19. It’s cute and useful, but I was hoping to get a more dedicated but ‘civilian’ thrower (i.e. with side switch or dial).

What I was hoping for is:

  • TIR
  • Efficient driver
  • Built-in USB-C charger
  • Throw (initial turbo, if only for a few minutes) significantly higher than IF19, say some 100000 cd (or 600-700 m)+.
  • would be great if it’s not too expensive

I was toying with the idea of Convoy M21H with 8 deg TIR but this may be still too floody. Wurkkos and Sofirn newer regulated throwers are too militaristic with their tail switches. Sofirn IF22A or Wurkkos TS11 are unregulated and a little too similar to IF19.

What are the viable options?

Wurkkos TD01C is the first to come to mind. I think it’s available for about $40 from Amazon.

Cheers. I looked at it and I’m not sure, but to turn it on you need to use tail switch and then use side switch to switch the levels?

Ah yeah, sorry about that. Been a while since I last thought about this light, since I gave it away so long ago. If you’re just looking for strictly a side switch light, that does make things a bit trickier. I believe Convoy has plans to release an M21K eventually, which is a single battery light which utilizes the same TIR as the M21J, but that one has been placed on hold until other items are addressed.

Noctigon K1?

With the XHP70.3 HI, it’s advertised as 110kcd for the 4000K CCT (which is obviously the correct choice!)

But it’s Anduril…

Can’t see the no-andruil requirement, somehow glossed over the TIR requirement though, apologies!

True, I missed it :-)

The M21H is a nice light, the ramping speed is a bit wonky, so I have mine on stepped mode.

I think you only want side switch, so possibly not relevent but the tactical tailcap is more a novelty, it’s not possible to turn the light on with the side switch if you’ve fitted the tail switch- it’s basically the same as a tailcap lockout.

Also not sure you will reach 100kcd with an XHP70.3 HI and 3° or 8° optic, I see numbers online of 36kcd or 28kcd

Have you thought about leaving Anduril in the simple mode?

What is not too expensive in $$$?

There’s this with the SFT70 in 6500K 120kcd X1L Elite – Firefly outdoor

Depending on your definition of efficient, the IF22A uses a FET driver where almost all the energy is transferred to the LED…

But that’s true for turbo only for a minute or two, isn’t it? The thermally-motivated step down methods of adding resistance with linear driver or by blinking with PWM are not that efficient, I understand. After the common unregulated Turbo, buck or boost drivers would deliver the energy more efficiently?

Though they differ in battery and LED, not only the driver, Sofirn IF19 can squeeze some 300 lm•h of light, while similar 18350 Spears M4v2 but with more efficient buck driver delivers about twice as much.
