I finally got my hands on an S1 and challenged myself to mod it to RGBWUV with MELD firmware. It was quite a challenge! The driver in the S1 is a really great design and I had to learn way too much about it in order to hack it for this mod. My video goes through the process including an in-depth look at how the stock driver works:
Here are a couple of pictures from the process:
Overall I think I like the S10 better, but the S1 is certainly amazing for how small it is, and that made this a fun challenge to fit so much extra functionality into it!
Yeah, I much prefer the beam from the OP reflector. S1 is really cool just for being so small, but in my opinion the S10 was small enough already and the beam pattern losses don’t justify the size reduction. Some people like floodier beams though, in which case it’s a win-win
Nope, I’m a cool white guy all the way! I know that’s an uncommon opinion around here…
I saw that a lot of people did not like the CW, so I figured I would ask. Absolutely incredible patience in your reverse engineering and build… My hat is off to you…
I have owned Everett’s tiny S10 (5) emitter light with MELD firmware for close to several years now. I too was wowed and had to have one! No regrets! It’s a FUN light for sure. Get yourself one
Thanks all for the kind words! I hope this inspires others to crack theirs open to do emitter swaps and the like - I haven’t come across any of those yet for the S1. It’s not bad getting it open; a threaded bezel would be nice but the press fit is manageable. Also, I’ve removed and pressed mine in two times in the course of this project and it doesn’t appear to have loosened at all.
Nice sub-mm work on this small S1 ! I'm especially impressed by the reverse engineering of the driver and re-use it for what has become a very different flashlight. And even more by the amount of work you have put into the mod and the video! Thanks for showing it all.
I saw that you used a plastic tool to remove the bezel from the S1.
I want to swap my Olight S2’s emitter, but can’t get the bezel out.
Do you, by chance get your hands on an S2 and torn it apart ?
