Cheers Scaru, yes the order should arrive early next week. I feel like a kid again, waiting for christmas!
I wanted to complete the project this weekend as a gift, but I guess it will have to wait
Basically you place the star on a hot surface like a frying pan and put some solder paste on the 2 contact points. Then you carefully place the LED there with a pair of tweezers and it should hop into place. Then take it off and you are done.
I have a piece of machined aluminium that sits ontop of a camping gas stove with a slight recess to hold the 20mm star. In the side of the Ali lump there is a hole for a digital thermometer.
I heat it up to about 200C with the bare star on it and touch some thin solder to the solder pads where the LED will sit. Then v carefully,I place the LED into position with some needle pliers. Take note of the polarity!
Once it's steady, lift off the star and place it onto some cool metal, ie the vice. This will draw away the heat, protecting the LED. Don't let the led stay on the heat for more than a few seconds. Perhaps practice removing and reflowing some old or duff LEDs first.
