xpg2 direct mount to copper… its probably driven to 2-3 amps I would guess as well
Kevin (lambda) also did a varapower with the xpg2 direct mount to copper at close to 3a with good results
the xpg2 has a smaller die than the xml - aka a smaller more intense beam with less of the lumens going into the spill
And remember, too, your only getting 2000hrs runtime out of the LED. So your going to have a much shorter life than normal.
Okay… if that`s true, it doesn`t look too difficult then 
(though I think soldering it onto copper could be a bit difficult, personally)
it sounds like it was a pain to get the led to focus properly from his description
