Other hobbies?

I like building electronic devices. My current Magnum Opus is this desk clock:

Aaand now I want Fig Newtons

2 Thanks

Those things look more like peanut-butter Oreos.

Which is amazing nobody there ever came up with, yet.

Double-Stuff, Triple-Stuff, Nothing-But-Stuff, but no PBOs??

1 Thank

They come in many, uh, “flavors”. I just thought the dark-brown-and-tan ones looked nice.

Another example is the… blue raspberry I guess?

It looks more like an actual fig newton. But the round ones fidget better.

2 Thanks

Nope. Mostly metal sliders, spinners, and haptics. Sometimes resin. I’m having trouble uploading pictures…

Metal detecting!
Of course you need to buy a good metal detector to even start the hobby. I am talking about maybe a $600.00 investment. It could be frustrating at first, because there is a lot of junk metal in the ground to trick the detector. But there is also so much treasure to be found. I love the history when you find old silver coins dropped/lost by people 100 years or more ago! And a few good finds (gold or diamond rings, etc.) can easily pay for your detector. So much fun and excitement, and also good exercise!

I’ve been curious about that for a while but haven’t researched it. I figure it would be a great way to get some exercise and fresh air, and I’m sure the “hunt” can be exciting. I wouldn’t have expectations of finding anything valuable but that would certainly be a bonus.

So equipment less than about $600 isn’t worth it?

Oooooh, me want! :joy:

I was a detectorist, but it somehow no longer interests me much. I did it for maybe 4 summers. Too many more hardcore hobbyists in my area who have already found most interesting stuff from easily accessible places.

Minelab Equinox 600 could be found for cheaper than 600€ on sale. It’s really good machine. Also Minelab’s Vanquish series is new beginner series, which has really good specs for the price.

1 Thank

I was detecting for 11 years. There is no other like DEUS.

2 Thanks

That’s a good machine. I’ve never tried one though. I’ve used multichannel Minelabs mostly.

I had Sovereign GT —> Explorer 2 —> XP Advntis 2 and ended up with XP DEUS. Fast response , lightweight and fully wireless machine. Lite version cost about 550eu

Mtb’ing though I’ve slowed down a lot (infrequent rides).
Home machining with drill press, lathe and mini cnc.
Soon to take up converting an off road go kart to electric.

I used to live near the sea and detect beaches. I enjoyed beach detection as they’re fairly clean, the sand is smooth as the tide is going out, and the scenery and breeze is always refreshing.

I have a Minelab Xterra 705 and a Vallon VMH3CS.

Since moving inland, my detecting has been fairly limited unfortunately.

Rocks, well, primarily mineral specimens moreso than just rocks.
