P60 advice needed

Hello all, I just got my first p60 host, a Solarforce L2P and I am trying to find a good drop in for it. I have been looking all over at the different options available and don’t know where to start. So many options :~

I read that the Manafont Ultrafire 3 mode XM-L is a good one for the money. But say I wanted to build my own starting with the emitter, there is XM-L2, XP-G2, XP-E2, XR-E, etc etc. My question is which of these emitters will work good for the size of the reflector in the p60? Good throw with nice spill, also not alot of heat if driven hard would be great. Would a de-domed xm-l throw better then say a xp-g2 and still have more spill?

Do you mean for the whole drop-in or just the emitter? I can find the emitters. full drop-in is kind of tricky to find for newer leds. been looking all over for a xp-g2 drop in thats not alot of $$

I am looking for an xpg2 dropin as well although my solarforce xpg .8-4.2 is pretty good with decent throw and flood. It’s a single mode and takes 1.8amps from unprotected and 1.6 from panasonic 3100mah protected, available from their website.

Scaru, are you sure those drop-ins are for XPG emitters. They look like they could be XML drop-ins. Also, you really need a 14mm or 16mm pcb for the emitter. 10mm pcb can cause problems with the reflector.

Thanks for the links Scaru I bookmarked them :slight_smile: I am really liking what I am seeing regarding the XP-G2. I would like to maybe drive the XP-G2 @ 1.7A. I would guess that there would be a lot less heat if I used a XP-G2 @ 2A vs the XM_L2 @ 3A+?. Do they make a copper mcpcb for XP-G2?

Rojos, you are right that they have a opening large enough for XM-Ls; but they do work with XP-Gs and smaller LEDs. The 10mm pcb is a bit on the small side that is true, but they do not stock a 16mm XP-G2.

Fujik is on the low end for thermal adhesives. If you got better stuff use it for potting. Though thanks for the great links Rojos. Is that Hobby King silicone wire very flexible?

Right now m-wave is selling some Arctic Cooling MX-2 for decent price (eBay). Comparable to Arctic Silver 5 (Amazon).

Running the XP-G2 at ~2.2A = If your driver is set with multi-modes you can always step down to medium.

How many W/mK does Fujik do?

Fasttech is really something… that drop-in was newly listed, just yesterday it was listed having copper pill (which was obviously brass), probably someone pointed that out and the listing was fixed immediately. That’s good service.

Dedomed XM-L will give you good throw even in P60 reflector. My MF one will do 200m easy, and still maintain the usable flood. Easiest and cleanest dedoming method for me is petrol soak (8-12hrs).

There are several Fujik pastes, but the one that everyone uses (BAB900) is 0.88W/m.K. Yes it's poor, not cheap for nothing.

MRT -I thinks its been tested and proven that most/all thermal adhesives are garbage. The adhesives with high silver content did a better job of insulating the silver & adhesive thus providing little to no metal contact. Do i still use it? Sure..beats crazy glue...... slightly

If you can tap and thread your heatsink ? 1 torqued screw into the base holding the emitter and performance is all you gain..

Its also a cheap easy mod for any light, with immediate results..

That's probably not necessary for a P60 drop-in. If you build it right, the reflector should keep the pcb and the pill pressed together nice and tight.

Anyway, yeah Fujik is what it is. I actually use Arctic Silver in my drop-ins and use Fujik for potting the driver. And if a tube of MX2 costs just a buck, then that's definitely worth a look.

But you know, as long as you apply a thin enough layer, I don't think the quality of the compound really matters that much. At least not where the application is a P60 drop-in. Not as much as getting the mating surfaces as smooth and flat as possible.
