Coyotes up the ante a bit. My idea of a perfect varmint rifle is a Ruger 10/22. Options for high-cap mags, lots of aftermarket parts, and some really tacti-cool accessories and stock-replacement options. Comes with the limitations of a .22LR. How about a .17 HMR? Ruger 77/17? HMR would have the range for varmint shooting, and enough of a knockdown for a coyote...
The .17 HMR looks interesting
My brother-in-law has one and loves it. It's definitely a step up from a .22LR... His is setup with a laminate thumbhole stock, bipod, and 3-9x scope.
I have had one since they first came out. Mine is the original Black synthetic Savage .17HMR. It does NOT have the accutrigger. I have shot one with the accutrigger, and I must say…Its intense. The only way to go. Also invest in a BSA Sweet 17 scope. (I know BSA is cheap and the black coating rubs off) but, once you dial it in, its a little tack driver. I LOVE varmint hunting. Besides, duck hunt, it’s my favorite. I only use .17 grain Hornady VMax rounds. The scope is made for that particular round. When I say its dead on, its dead on at 100 yards. I can get nickel groupings at 50 yards over and over.
I have since retired my .22’s, magnums included. One shot of the Hornady VMax (all I shoot) will take a 20lb raccoon at 200 yards with one shot with ease. I can blast jack rabbits and take them with 1 shot easily. As you can tell, I LOVE this gun. Plus its relatively “cheap” to own and operate. 500 rounds can be had for $140 or so bucks.
Everyone who has shot mine, ended up getting one. You can look it up, but at 100 yards, the .17 has something like 8 inches less drop than a .22! Not to mention over 2500 fps! At 50 yards, pull the trigger, its on target.
The only negative I can think of is that the feed ramp needs some work. It will jam sometimes when you try to cycle the bolt to slowly. I polished mine with 1500 grit sandpaper and got good results. Also, I worked the action for hours. Made it much smoother and more reliable.
Also, be aware of wind. Wind will throw that round off because its so light.
So, Estimated prices: gun $300, Scope $70, 500 rounds $140, sling $25, extra magazines $75, targets $25. Total fun package around: $635, or about 55 C8’s!
Oh, get a nice thrower light. One that can reach out to 500 yards is ideal. I have made a few 500 yard shots at night.
Ill take the gun and parts to mod it and 1 C8 with a green led
My in-law has the Savage 93R, gray laminate thumbhole stock, and his has the accutrigger...
The Ruger can also be dressed up.
the first glance it looked like a Talon SS air rifle witch i like the style with a large scope
How about a silenced Savage? Or a $1200 Ruger 10/22 built from the ground up? And just for fun, my $2000+ Colt 1911. I LOOOOVE guns!
 i like the first one all black and large scope
Thanks! It’s only a 22lr though. Lol I say only, but it reaches out to 300yards easy. I went with 22lr over .17hmr or 22wmr, simply because of the suppressor. 22lr is the only one that comes in subsonics. With the can, and subsonic rounds, it’s literally silent. The firing pin striking the round, is louder than the report. It’s rediculous!
if you can get aquila .22sss rounds, you wont hear even that. not to mention it has 60 grain bullet.
there is one catch thou, they work best with 9in rifling. normal 1;16 twist is too slow for such long and heavy bullet
I see one at cabala's and dicks sporting goods i might stop by and have a look :) cant wait to purchase one from viewing your pic edeekeos that's what im wanting mine to look like with a thumb hole if they sell something like that for it
Remmy 700 .243win shooting 90gr. sierra boat tail with 41gr’s of IMR 4350…
It’s my pig and yote gun… She has sisters
I don’t think you want to get quite this involved, but here is a nice varmint/target rig. It has a custom action (Kelbly Panda), synthetic stock, 45x Leupold Competition Series scope, and target grade stainless steel barrel. The caliber is 6mm PPC, and handloading is required.
It really is more of an old school benchrest rifle, but those evolved from regular varmint rifles that owners modified for better accuracy. Here is the first target I ever shot with it. The three groups were five shots each at 100 yards.
Good luck with your search.

For the best bang for your buck I’d lean you towards Savage… I have a 17HMR Model 93 with a Heavy barrel from savage… It’s an early model before the Accutrigger switch over, I dropped a jewel sear in her and she breaks like glass at 1.4lbs…
The only downside to the .17hmr is it’s nasty messy on small game. I started off with 17gr hornady V-Max polymer tips and it blew shit up… I’ve sense switched to 20gr hornady hollow points. Still wicked but not as explosive on small game…. Head shots only my friend or no meat left….
I have a Thompson Center Venture chambered in .204 Ruger which is outstanding right out of the box. Right now they are running a rebate until some time in march making them very affordable.
