I am doing a deep reflector c8 mod… I have used these bodies before, same company, with no issues. So, while waiting for the bodies to come in, I build the pillar with a driver, and a 20mm star. All I should of had to do is screw it in. Bodies finally come in, and the they have a bigger bore that screws into the head than before. Now I have a built pillar that is .050 to small. Probably not, but is there anything I can do to make it snug in the head?
Sure there are plenty of ways to make it work. The ideal solution for thermal transfer (even better than the correct size threads) would be to turn the threads off (both ID of the body and OD of the pill) and make it a press fit. Since the pill to body fit will then be even larger (after removing the threads) you could the get a piece of copper pipe, cut it to length, split it and use that as a shim between the now smooth sided pill and the smooth walled host.
Really man your best / easiest / cheapest bet it to just get new pills or new bodies.
Yes, I thought that myself. It came with an aluminum pill with a 16mm xm-l emitter. Even though its oversized, it still probably won’t fit the 20mm star that I used and I used a brass ring to secure the driver which im sure I won’t be able to use. Just a big mess. I haven’t seen a pill with that type of thread eithier.
For reference what host and pill is it? This could be useful info to someone.
The host is a deep c8 and the pill is a standard brass c8 pill ordered from lck-led. Why the pills are different now is beyond me.
There's your problem, you think that Chinese manufacturers use a standard. Even within a model it's a crap-shoot, between different models you really can't assume interchangeable parts.
If you can find a way to position it, maybe you can fill with JB Weld, or JB Weld+SiC.
The deep C8s have always used a wider, shorter pill, to fit the taller reflector. Why can't you just transfer the driver & star to the new pill?
I ultimately did. I had to make it wider to fit the 20mm star, which was not easy without the use of a mill.
The deep C8s ultimately aren't worth the trouble, the wide-base XR-E reflector will still out throw the deep narrow-base one.
I think you could put copper or aluminum foil between the pill and body, with heat sink compound. The foil would be soft enough that you might get more contact area and just as good heat transfer.
Seems to work better for what I use them for. Keeps beam slightly narrower than a standard c8. Doesn’t spill as much eithier.
