I got hit by an automobile in April while cycling. I had converted a green telephone box from the side of the road into a saddlebag. Those are made of HDPE with titanium dioxide to give them UV protection. The automobile bumper shattered the box and the box shattered the automobile bumper. Those are made of polypropylene which a rubbery plastic which is also unbreakable. My shoulder blade took off the mirror which is likely one of the stiffer plastics made with nitrogen. Those do break. So I started looking around and noticed broken plastic everywhere. It is well known that industrial solvents will make plastics brittle. I don’t like to tell people where I am at when I bicycle tour but it was near a military base. I like a plastic flashlight as much as the next person but it is time we started looking for real unbreakable plastic.

My infamous Birb Water Park™ is an inverted lid from a huge Tupperware coffin. Nice rugged flexible tough plastic.
Both “ears” casually snapped off from minor force lifting it to hose it out. It hardly sees any direct sunlight in winter, maybe half the day in summer. So yeah, it got brittle from sunlight, no solvents to be seen.
I’ve seen “UV resistant” tie-wraps get brittle over time, too. There’s still nekkid plastic exposed to light.
For real UV protection, you need a UV blocking paint that doesn’t chip, flake, craze, etc.
