Hello everybody.
I want to provide simple, configurable driver but I want to know opinion about modes.
There will be 4 groups of modes:
1.(for bike) 10% - 40% - 100% - strobe (2Hz 25%)
2.(EDC) moon - 5% - 35% - 100%
3.(tactical) 100% (only)
4.(extra) 5% - 15% - 35% - 70% - 100% - strobe (2Hz 25%)
Change of group will be possible by multiple soft clicks.
In each group modes will be changed normaly, like in most drivers, nanjg for example.
And there are questions for all of you:
Do you like this idea?
Would you like to change percentage power of modes? or they are ok? (optimal for most users)
(Please present your idea like I presented above.)
Any else what you think
For bike use I like drivers with 100% high and around 40% low. No blinkers and just two model, like high and low beams. It would be great to have a hidden lower mode, I.e. holding for 2 seconds (talking about electronic switch), nut for standard mode I like just hi and lo
1) moon, low, med, high, turbo (wide open, 30-90 second timer, step back down to high), no memory
2) turbo (see above), high, med, low, (moon is debatable, depends on the use), no memory
I recommend you use logarithmic values, because it better mimics what the eye perceives.
My 2¢
You do not work for Gallup®, so I recommend you change the title to avoid any confusion.
1st group: I don't like strobe on a bike light, if you are illuminated well (which is the case with a modern led light) strobe is not needed for getting attention in traffic, it is mostly annoying to other road users. So 40%-100% as suggested by totilde sounds good
2nd group: EDC group sounds perfect (it is like the 4th group of the qlite)
3rd group: useful no nonsense on-off, great!
4th group: unneccessary as it is now, levels too close to each other, the second group has all the modes you need. How about making it a 'ramping strobe' group? I mean 100% light when on, but the strobe frequency 'ramping' up and down from 1Hz to 4kHz ? Don't know if that can be programmed but I think it is cool. (Or else just put a bunch of different strobe types in this group).
I understand that, it is a difficult discussion, obviously I am more a cyclist than a car driver. If all else fails, I'm totally for stroboscopes on bikes to prevent accidents. But I'd rather deal with careful drivers combined with the road lay-out and traffic rules made such that a nasty strobe is not needed.
There are trucks driving around in Holland with angry orange fluorescent signs on the front right corner saying 'WARNING, DEAD ANGLE' to prevent cyclists standing there while waiting before traffic lights. It sure is a good idea to warn the cyclists for the dangers, but it also feels a bit like the truck-driver is shifting the responsibility for being run-over to the cyclist.
Memory OFF - flashlight will always start in first mode in defined group.
Memory ON - standard memory of mode. (no next-mode memory
I know storbe is most controversial mode but I think one, slow strobe in one of group (for bike) will be nice. Strobe will be slow (2 maybe 3Hz) and no full power like in most chinese drivers.
And to be honest I have no good idea for fourth group.
I know for now fourth group is not good, modes are too similar, but what you think about two groups for bike?
One simple (5-40-100) and one with strobe (5-40-100-strobe 2Hz 25%)
I believe in everybody looking out for everybody else - to a point - but I mostly believe that the person most responsible for my safety is me. So, I guess I’d have to say it IS the cyclist’s responsibility to be safe by NOT illegally co-occupying the space that belongs to that truck.
edit: Oh yeah, I think a strobe feature is a good idea. A strobing light does help draw people’s attention toward something that isn’t normally there. In my area, all school buses have strobes on them. It’s not so much the fact of being seen with the eyes, it’s more being seen with understanding. But maybe it should not be part of the normal cycle, but take a long press or something, so that if someone doesn’t want it, they don’t have to cycle through it. That is one less click to press, and one less aggravation for some people. It would be cool (don’t know if possible) if any level or mode could be made strobe with a long press, then back again with a long press. I like to have the memory function, too. Again, it’s about keeping the number of clicks down. And turbo mode, to satisfy the flashaholics.
@DavidEF, that is only software mod for nanjg, so is not possible to define long press to provide strobe. All will be operated by standard reverse click.
> As a car driver, I highly recommend you use strobe
As a going on elderly car driver, who has vision that’s still way better than the minimum allowable vision with which people can get a driver’s license, I also recommend the strobe be available.
As a more often pedestrian, I use a strobe in crosswalks, and I can tell you — drivers notice that MUCH faster than they notice one more little shiny thing in a world that’s full of shiny things.
Time it yourself — the time lag between turning on a flashlight and the driver noticing and slowing down, vs. the lag after turning on a strobe pointed toward oncoming traffic. It takes an extra second or two for the vehicle to slow down when it’s just a light, vs. a strobing light.
Right and wrong is philosophical. Broken legs and necks are not. Who should, who would? In the end, who did, who didnt?
Im guessing those stickers highlight the blindspots in the trucks mirrors??? A truck driver can only see what is visible to them. No mater how vigilant they are, if you are unaware of blindspots, and put yourself in one, you might be in a world of hurt. The truck driver can not keep you out of his blindspots, cyclists and pedestrians (actually anything that will hide in the blindspot) must be aware of them and keep themselves out of them.
