Yeah, it was an odd collection of cheap-ass zommies as well as pricey reflector lights.

But finally Sofirn and Wurkkos are getting represented, as well as more mainstream lights as Nitecore, Acebeam, and even Oilight.

I wonder how a Q8 type light would hold up. 5000 lemons off the start, lots of thermal mass to keep pushing longer, and plenty of battery power whether 3Ɨ21700 or 4Ɨ18650.

Only thing that bugged me was when he commented one of the lights had a yellower beam than the others, as if it were a Bad Thing.

He should come here and be treated to people wanting 1800K lights. :joy:

Guessing that was maybe 4500K vs the usual eye-watering 7000K rainforest specials…

Spoiler for the unsurprising conclusions: the expensive brands perform well, and the Wurkkos is a good value.

There are some issues with the methodology though:

  • Points are awarded for the most throw. Increasing throw does not necessarily improve a general-purpose flashlight, and at a certain point becomes a detriment.
  • Runtime is measured in the highest mode to an unspecified cutoff (zero? I don’t think it’s zero). This rewards lights with aggressive throttling, balanced only by the output at 15 minutes metric.
  • UI isn’t even mentioned.
  • Modes other than the highest are only mentioned in passing.
  • Color characteristics are only mentioned once, to describe the high-CRI neutral-white light from Milwaukee as ā€œyellowā€. White balance is set so that cool white lights look white, and the Milwaukee indeed looks yellow.

How did he only get 500lm for the Wuben? Flashaholic measured it higher than spec @ turn on, 1100 ANSI, I get well over 1000, too. Did he do that tests without charging the batteries first and that of the wuben was quite low?

He previously got unreasonably low output from a Zebralight headlamp too. In that case, I’m nearly certain he didn’t have it in the mode he thought he did, but the Wuben C3 is a basic reverse-clicky where it’s pretty hard to do that.

Not the most trustworthy then - sadly, he has some good content, but flashlights are not his thing.

He could very well have a defective C3. At its price point, I imagine it’s hard to keep the defect rate low.

One thing you have to remember is that he likely gets all of his test products from Amazon or big box stores. So if your favorite light is only shipped from China he’s not going to be testing it. And for many people in the US and probably in many places around the world that holds true also. If it’s not available from Amazon or a big box store they are not going to consider buying it or even be aware of it. I don’t think he mentioned a model number of any of these lights. To just refer to these lights as the brand name doesn’t do anybody a service. To just gather a dozen lights from various companies of different sizes and shapes, battery sizes,etc, and then compare the lumens and run times is not really helpful to anybody here. For most people perusing Amazon there is just an overwhelming number of (garbage) flashlights. So if this helps some of them narrow down their choices a little bit I guess it’s useful to a few people. Those people don’t understand or care ahead of time how important the UI is.

The one thing project farm does do well though is provide ā€œsomeā€ objective numbers to evaluate the test subjects. Even if the test subjects should not be compared to each other.

I didn’t get that he was belittling the light for being yellow… More just a passing comment. Plus it was definitely more yellow than any of the ones he tested. As usual, it was a good set of tests… maybe not up to flashaholic standards, but I think he tests for a more mainstream audience.

nope, it cycles through all the modes. doubleclick is strobe.

He screwed up on the Sofirn SC29 too by not having it in turbo. Kind of annoying to make basic mistakes for such a video.

I give PF credit here because he is the only one doing head-to-head testing in flashlights on youtube and it’s a lot of work. Todd isn’t a flashlight guy and it shows, and some of his numbers seem low. Otherwise, it’s a good watch and of course, the outcomes are too predictable!

Some seem low, some seem high, particularly the seeker 4 pro figures. I’ve not seen any of the reviewers get the rated brightness, nevermind exceed it by 1000 lumens.

His methodology of ā€œoverall winnerā€ with the rankings is great, but it’s just poorly applied in this specific use case.

If he were to do a video based entirely on throwers, or flooders, or AAA lights for example, it’d be a much, much better comparison, but he’s got floody lights next to throwers next to zoomies, and the floody stuff is ranked lower due to not throwing as far.

He does listen and re-test categories with viewer suggestions though so hopefully he will do another one in the future.

There was Torque Something (Torque Test, ??) who did similar testing.

Torque Test Channel. Yep they have dine a few rounds of head to head comparisons in roughly the same way, using the TKLamp tester and similar methodologies. Both are good, but there’s some room for improvement. Testing that many flashlights isn’t easy so I give mad props to both.
