So I just installed one of these big 3 mode drivers from KD in my Sky Ray L1. When I try and use protected batteries, it flashes once on high mode as if the thermal protection on the driver is kicking in. However, when I use my unprotected batteries, high mode functions fine. Is this probably the battery protection kicking in? Because with the protected batteries, I can run it in any of the lower modes just fine- even after high mode flashes on and off. This suggests to me that the battery protection is not kicking in, because I thought they had to be ‘reset’ once the battery protection tripped. All the batteries I’m using (both the protected and unprotected) are high quality (panasonic and sanyo respectively). Thanks!
I would say the over current protection is kicking in. The driver linked puts around 2.5a to the leds, so the battery current draw would have to be about double that to match the vf of the leds(boost driver). Over current kicking in doesnt have to be reset as far as I know. Only over discharged protection has to be reset. Just my guess.
Thanks, if over current does not need to be reset, then that makes sense. I measured the tailcap current and with 3 cells, I got a max of about 6 amps at the start (but it drops pretty fast- thermal issues I’m guessing)
Yes, overcurrent protection resets itself in a few seconds. Overvoltage (charging) resets this way as well. Only undervoltage is permanent, it requires a forward voltage (battery recharge) to reset the state.
Your issue does sound like overcurrent protection triggered.
