Can someone please enlighten me on this,
I bought a couple of protected Sanyos 18650 from DX, but I was surprised to see that I got PCBs on the positive side of the cell, is this possible?
I have like 20 cells and about half are protected and all have the PCB on the negative side.
This smells fishy…

Huh? You talking about the black plastic as seen in this DX photo?

The protection circuit is still on the bottom I believe (I have 4 of these cells and that's what I see), though I am unsure of the need for the black plastic ring at the top. Or have you verified that it is a protection circuit on the top?
EDIT - ok, you added photos to your post, so yes we are talking about the black plastic ring. Doesn't it still appear to have a protection circuit at the bottom? Mine appear that way.

I had a few xtar3100 that I took the protection off. They were flat top cells but with protection on they were button tops. I imagine this is sort of the same thing.
On the left is one of my Sanyo protected cell, on the right is the one I got today…

PS- Thank you CRX, I understand now that in fact the PCB is on the positive side. My bad for not searching for this thread. Thanks again and my apologies.
Aha! Skipped that thread. Swore I saw what looked like the indentation of a protection circuit on the bottom end. I'll have to take another look now.
