And V3

And I really like the feedback so instead of waiting for the Q-team I just involve all!

Here is my idea for the general shape of the fins.
Think the small dimples as the Thorfire S70 has 8

The botton rows of fins in a different design for easy reach of switch and tripod mount.

I thnk this design both fits the Thorfire line up and is usefull as anti roll.
also the fingers will be almost guided to the switch now.

As always, shoot!
(and again sorry for the poor skills, I hope it is clear nevertheless ;))

I don’t think you can move the tripod mount far enough down the head to make it anywhere close to the balance point of the light. I think I recall that you have several SRK clones - load them with cells and see where they balance. It would be nice to be able to mount on one of the tiny travel tripods with flex arms. I’m with mapache in thinking that with the mount in the head it will simply tip over.

Yeah this is simply the lowest location for it without moving it to the tube. And that is not an option for a number of reasons.
But let me play with a SRK without the switch, brb

OK
I removed the tripod nut from the Warson
Took a SRK in pieces and removed the switch
wrapped the nut in plastic and screwed in a little tripod through the hole.
Then put in 4 Panasonics (being the largest and heaviest 18650 cells I have) and checked how stable it was

And well even with no grip to the tripod I could stand it properly on the lowest way of the tripod

MED

High

Strange

So the location with a proper nut will work fine
Especially wih a more sturdy bigger tripod then this small light thingy.

That’s a cute tripod! I’m glad it works this way. When I get home I will see if I can find my small flex arm tripod and post a picture of that. I don’t have an SRK to try it with. Anyone else out there know the type I’m talking about?

I guess it depends on how much force it takes to flex the arms. Something like this is what I’m thinking about:

Yep, I got one of those flex jobs, and couple of M6's, and an L1, and.... Whoops, way too many, but I'll give it a try when I get home.

What about placing the mount on the battery tube instead of the head? Just far enough back to sit on the tripod and clear the head.

Well I have pulled the trigger on those flex things almost many times but decided not to trust them
The one ypi see is actually pretty nice, I have had in screwed in the Warson for a long time AMD used it as handle
It came with a €6,99 laser guide thing and is OK.

How about the shape of the fins a couple of posts up?

That head looks great. Very nice work.

Now if the Tube Tail could have female threads that matched the head. :zipper_mouth_face:

If it screws on a camera it should screw onto the Q8
Just one size that is on cameras for years and years.
If a ā€œgorilla podā€ has that screw it fits, if not then not.

IIRC, standard tripod threading is 1/4 20.

They should be placed as close to center mass of the Q8 with cells installed as possible. It looks to me like this spot would be on the battery tube.

Battery tube location would probably be the center of gravity, I agree. But I’m not sure if there is enough extra aluminum in the tube to give space for the tripod mount…. but maybe there is. That would just leave us with one other drawback: appearance. The hole would probably never line up properly with the switch. Some people don’t care, and other people that would drive them insane.

(Note: I’m commenting as a ā€œcivilianā€ BLFer, not as an official member of the ā€œQ Teamā€)

This civilian agrees. It won’t be on the tube, and there are lots of good reasons for that! Stop talking about it being on the tube.

No aside from looks there are other reasons the tube is out.
Head it is.

I like the head location, and I like the head sketch that was posted. Just an idea, on some other lights the side of the driver cavity where the tripod adapter is located is not reamed out as much (leaving the wall thicker) to allow the threading to continue deeper in the light

DavidEF: No need to get excited. If my suggestion doesn’t have merit, or I’ve missed a previous discussion on this topic, please just explain that in a courteous manner.

Thanks.

you got me on the list for one atm

Caleb, David expresses it a bit husky
And in a thread like this it is extremely hard to keep track.

Though you are right about the ideal location there are too many things that still prevent it from being there.
So please keep on thinking along, true and good input is more then welcome, warnings, jokes, well the list of things that are great to see is a bit too long to write down here, you get my point

We hope to be able to disclose more about the tube when Barry is back, this could take a week. And even then we still need confirmation and more info so it will take probably longer.

So for now we can focus on the head.
The overal shape, and loving all the input!

Yes PD, a part not carved in so deep, maybe also great for the switch side could be a great idea!

Sorry, Caleb! My post was NOT aimed at you or really anyone at all in particular. Please forgive me if I was a bit too rough. I have a tendency to be concise and abrupt to a fault! :person_facepalming:
