Quake in NZ

I hope all my fellow NZ BLFers are ok?
Tragic night of lives lost and damage after huge quakes and some tsunami.
Almost the entire country felt the first one @ 7.6 on the Richter.
I got little sleep after 12am….

Really so sorry to hear about this. I’m not in NZ, but my heart goes out to all of you. Stay strong, and be safe!

My mate just got back from Christchurch a few days ago hes Kiwi and he was sad that he missed the quake he said he felt a few when he was there but nothing major. All his mates loved it but they said it lasted 2 and half minutes. It was a Massive quake felt all the way in windy wellington and past that. The mapping the USGS has done shows it went almost all the way through NZ. It was a full moon last night also they have linked moon cycles with earthquakes.

Lucky it was a bit deeper and a bit further away from Christchurch then the last time. Plus NZ has cracked down on the building code. I am sure Australia will send help.

Thoughts to all of our Kiwi neighbours from across the ditch!

Not just a full moon, but a “supermoon”. The last time that the moon was this close to the earth was 1948. I’ve read reports saying that it will appear between 12% and 20% larger than a normal full moon.

Sorry to hear that.., I do know how it feel , and is nothing to do , but to help as much as you can the ones that are in need or lost their homes ...Restoring the faith in humanity is not so hard to do...

My thoughts and prayers are with the people in NZ and hope that the situation will recover quickly.

I heard the death toll is at 2 at the moment (source at time of writing: CNN) - may their souls rest in peace!

Thanks all. I’m some 600+ km south of the epicentre, and man did we feel it. Sustained rolling for over 2and1/2 minutes I went outside and saw my son’s school right across the road swaying. The infrastructure damage over both islands is massive. Lucky the death toll is so low so far

These pics tell a devastating story

I’m about 30 Km north of Wellington (~230km from the epicenter) and it was strong enough to cause power lines to short, about 2 items in the entire house fell off the shelf so nothing too bad… the jolts (although big) were pretty muted by the time they got this far north. I work in Wellington so got the day off today while the engineers check the buildings… probably have tomorrow off as well unless they get the trains back up and running.

Interestingly enough all the aftershocks have been spread across about 100 kilometers in a line between Wellington and Hanmer Springs.

It’s been an insane 22 or so hours. I have a friend in Wellington he has been saying it’s surreal like a movie up there. City centre like a ghost town and wailing air raid sirens for tsunami alerts. Freaky stuff. I looked over the beaches here (Dunedin) @3:30am and saw the ripples coming in from the horizon. Only ~40cm or so high but kind of wakes you up a bit.

We slept right through this one. The one off East cape a few months ago woke us up. I live in Tauranga and people felt it heaps here. My friend said that water was sloshing out of his pool.

I was in Kaikoura and Blenheim just a week ago. Very happy to have left NZ before these quakes. I hope y’all there recover ASAP.

i’m in welly… we’re still getting the occasional tremor, nothing quite as serious as the big jolt last week (hope it stays that way)… cbd bore the brunt of it with quite a number of buildings with restricted or no access… a couple of them might have to be brought down.

I’ll be in NZ in just over a month on holiday. Might take a few small AA lights with me for emergency use.
