question about using 1.2v nimh AA instead of officially stated 1.5v AA alkline

I have a EDC flashlight that use a single 1.5V AA alkaline.
wonder if it’s safe to use a 1.2v nimh in it
and is there a way to calculate the rough lumens of using a 1.2v nimh, since I know the lumens of using a 1.5v AA

Lumens are usually higher on a nimh because of less internal resistance of a nimh vs an alkaline .When loaded an alkalines voltage sags pretty hard as well ..Nimh batteries almost always charge up to over 1.4 volts anyway ..mine settle down to mid 1.375??? after sitting a bit

eneloops or nimhs almost always win the output race

alkalines just suck

thanks, Boaz
then is it safe to use a 1.2v nimh

All my lights are brighter with eneloops, except for the ones that take lithium. They’re jealous though.

Yeah I'd expect them to be brighter running nimh ..

Look at old4570 s reviews he uses alkalines and nimh 's in almost all his reviews ..

the nimh batteries almost always out perform alkaleaks

So Boaz, is it safe good use, factory just claimed it AA, is it OK to use nimh without any other concern. :quest:

Alkalines are more likely to leak at high current draws. Use nimhs.

absolutely

Get Low self discharge NIMH batteries >> eneloops

They keep their charge for a long time while basic nimh batteries will lose their charge within a pretty short time

buy eneloops and get happy

what model of light is it?

just on/off

what brand and model of light?

budget, non-branded light. there is only 1 single mode for on. :frowning:

+1. Eneloops rule

I’ve been quite happy using an LSD AA NiMh in an SK68 clone. I understand the Li batter for it will ouput extra, but I’m not inclined to go buy one as it would be the only one for that torch and fit nothing else I have.
The light output from the NiMH is good enough, so I’m sticking with that.
In fact, I’ll probably buy another one or two for my own use and a couple for gifts - at that price, it would be rude not to.
