My little Uniquefire S10 was minding its own business in the car console, when I remembered I had a spare XM-L T6 from a dead Solarforce dropin lying around.
So - I screwed the S10 pill out, and unsoldered the XR-E leads and popped it off - some dry flaky compound under the star proved no hindrance.
Minor filing of the XM-L star was needed.
Then I popped it in place, resoldered and that was that.
Standard driver allegedly is 1000ma.
No before beamshots but it was typical XR-E, with a smallish hotspot and some spill.
Nice looking little light, I have a soft spot for 1x14500 lights, I think I need one of these for a 10dd swap. Question tho, are the tail parts able to be taken out or is it some sort of press fit design?
Good work on the mod, I’m guessing the XM-L was probably recycled from something else so the price was right.
I like my S10 very much and keep it stock, it is in my opinion one of the icon flashlights of the 'XR-E' era: good looking, well build, cheap, everyone had one, and it was outperforming in beam quality and throw newer EDC flashlights for long after the the XP-G and XM-L came on the market. The only shortcoming is the short and fine tailcap-threading, the threading wears out eventually and the tailcap falls off, changing batteries must be done with care.
I did mod a Ultrafire K10 (=the S10 with Ultrafire lettering) with a XM-L2 though, it is one of my reference flaslights: with an Efest 14500 running a 2x7135 700mA lineair driver, a XM-L2 soldered on Sinkpad soldered on the brass pill and the good heatsinking of the thick aluminium walls the output is a very very constant 226lm. I made the flashlight as a light measuring reference, but I also came to like it as a sturdy and reliable flashlight with a very nice smooth beam. And it is my most efficient flashlight: 86lm/W with battery voltage 4V, it stays into regulation for an hour until the battery voltage is ~3.2V (under 700mA load), the efficiency is 107lm/W by then :-) .
