Personally I do not wish to accept any eye damage that I can easily prevent. Some yellow glasses cut out much of it. Vision dominates our perception of the world and they don’t even know the extent of the blue/uv hazard.
As someone who’s had welder’s burn a few times I can tell you UV light is way bigger of an issue than something that causes slight eye discomfort, that shit hurts bad and can cause some serious lasting damage.
A new review article (these come out once a year, for many areas of science)
has distinguished the band of photons that kill cells in the retina — 40 nanometers wide — from the known wider light range that regulates our body clock
Quoting from that article:
“… the specific band of blue light most harmful to the retina and to the RPE cells was identified to be at 415 nm to 455 nm.
The blue-violet light that was discovered as part of this study is a 40 nm band of visible light that causes the maximum retinal cell death. …
… The labeled blue-turquoise light range, which is from 465 nm to 495 nm, is essential to our vision, the function of our pupillary reflex, and in general to human health. It also helps to regulate our Circadian sleep/wake cycle….”
Damn, right next to each other on the spectrum. This is going to be tricky, though I gather there are some chemicals that can act notch filters, very selectively absorbing just a narrow band of wavelengths, if they can find such…
Presumably this is for adults, whose lenses naturally attenuate blue light.
Children, whose lenses haven’t started to turn yellow and stiffen, are more of a concern for this.
