I still consider myself a newbie. I have some Wurkkos Anduril lights and some Convoys. Nothing fancy.

But after using (modern) lights every day and night for six months, there is one thing I would not go without if I could have only one light. And that is ramp on from low.

I don’t know if there are any non-Anduril lights that do this. But I love knowing that no matter what brightness I last used, if I click and hold, it will ramp from low. I would say this is a marriage saving feature.

In the Before Times, I would put my hand over the light, turn it on, and let a tiny sliver out between my fingers. Workable, but I was just a hand twitch away from catastrophe. With a newer light, I might get hundreds of lumens when I need three, because I forgot I was trying to see deer down the field before I went to bed.

Sure Anduril can be complicated if you find you can’t control your urge to click. But for 99.9% of everyday use it’s dead simple. And I find it more reliable than the sometimes finicky half clicks of other interfaces.

Thanks! Fancy flashlight features may be nice, and I’m more guilty of that than almost anyone else on the planet, but it’s more important to make sure the basics are solid. People generally only need a few things from a light…

  • From off: Instant access to low, high, and something between.
  • While on: Instant access to off, plus a way to go brighter and dimmer, and maybe jump to/from full power.

Everything else is optional.

Exactly! I typically tell people not familiar with it there are only 2 things you need to know about Anduril:

  1. Click to turn on or off
  2. Hold to make brighter, or click then hold to make dimmer

Everything else is a bonus feature, although I personally use many of them (including hold for moonlight and ramping up, mode memory settings, battery check, easy turbo access, stepped mode, candle mode, etc).

I guess for those who can’t control the urge to click wildly, there is one more thing to know:

  1. Loosen the tailcap and tighten it again if it’s not acting as expected.

…and when re-tightening the tail cap, hold the switch down for about 3 seconds or until the light blinks/flashes.

Most clicking mistakes won’t require a factory reset, but fair enough: if you really mess something up, then that one additional step of holding the button down while restoring power might be necessary.

Ramp on from low is amazing. Pretty crazy I can point an 8000 lumen light right at my face and hold down the button and it’ll start up so low you can stare right into the LEDs at first and then in another 2.5 seconds it’ll be brighter than a car’s highbeams. I have ramp speed slowed down one level so I could set top of ramp higher and have better control. I like that I can have some ramp closer to turbo but with enough control that I don’t ramp too fast and accidentally blind myself.

But sometimes I’m impatient. So I set manual memory to just before the FET would step in, that way i can click it on and it’s low enough that I won’t blind myself accidentally but it also puts me a little higher up in the ramps as a starting point and saves me like 1.5 seconds lol

But sometimes I’m really impatient so I click once to my manual setting and then click and hold to start ramping up, without leaving enough time in between the two clicks, which the flashlight (correctly) registers as a 2H, momentary turbo, and I instantly blind myself anyways lol. All I need to do is get myself to wait an extra like 0.2 seconds before I start ramping up lol. One day I’ll remember

Dude, you’re free to do what you want, but I advise you not to do so if you buy a LEP one day :wink:
