Most times it’s innocent. We all make mistakes. However, there are times where I’ve seen this cause heated arguments and disagreements. That was Mostly in my lurking days.
It can happen when People who are not following or paying attention to the thread and then make assumptions based on false evidence. Because the evidence and the answer is usually provided in the op!
In any event, the solution is simple. Stay informed about what’s going on in the thread before you jump to conclusions.
Most of us have experienced this, that includes me or obviously I wouldn’t have started this thread.
In no way am I going to bring up or discuss some of those events. That would be counterproductive, controversial and provoking.
Yep. I would also add that even if you’re sure that the other person is wrong, even stating the truth on a matter should be avoided here if it leads to controversy. It’s fine to make a post to the effect of “As I understand it it’s actually like this…”, but only once. If somebody else still doesn’t agree or doesn’t accept it then simply drop the subject. A lot of arguments here could be avoided that way. Of course, users that constantly go around with a chip on their shoulder and intentionally provoke arguments will receive warnings from me and eventually be banned.
I recognize that we all have strong opinions and convictions on a lot of important and controversial subjects. But a flashlight forum isn’t the proper venue for sharing them, and much less pontificating about them.
I have learned the hard way that if you are having a civil discussion, and someone becomes rude or insulting, then the civil discussion has become an argument.
Even if you are not being rude, it's best to leave the argument otherwise *just communicating* in the argument is escalating the argument.
I think I have a lot of trouble with this because I have Asperger's and I don't pick up on social cues very well, though I'm working on trying to be better at this.
Also, no offense, but expecting others to actually read the thread is not very realistic.
A lot of people don't read the thread, though it would be nice if everyone did.
I usually just skim threads, so I am frequently guilty of not reading the thread.
If I am in a civil discussion, and someone clearly didn't read the thread, then repeating myself might be good.
If it's an argument, though, it's best not to repeat what has already been established in the thread and not communicate with whoever is upset.
I’m guilty of skimming through a thread, but I’ve been pretty good about reading the OP since that is what the entire thread is about. Well, the OP is what the thread is “supposed” to be about

One downside to the freedom we have here at this forum is the ability to go back and change the OP regardless of how old it is.
Therefore, when the OP effs up and someone calls them on it, they simply go back and omit/change info to something less bullsheet.
Same people get their panties in a bunch when you use the quote function because then their original BS is preserved.
Seen it happen lotssssssss of times.
Should be locked after a few min./hours or only changed by the admin. Would stop the funny business.
Other forums operate this way.

The cause of many arguments here is often because members view many topics through political eyes.
For example. Mention the cons of electric cars (a purely technical conversation) and some members feel personally insulted that you are attacking the the environment and global warming.
And it not just about electric cars. You can turn any conversation into a political one.
It’s not any particular members fault if another member cannot see both sides of a technical conversation and can only relate to the views of the person they voted for.
