Wanting to update a WF-502b, I like the form factor (and low cost) of the 502b as an EDC. Would prefer to have something with 5 brightness levels, No strobe or SOS modes. I kinda like my EDCs somewhat floody…and mine currently is, even with a smooth reflector. I’m a bit skeptical of loss from an orange peel reflector, but let’s not get hung up on that detail. I also value good low modes.
I saw older threads (2011) where somebody was offering “build to order” P60 drop ins, where you could specify drive current, emitter type, mode # configuration, and custom programmed output levels. Don’t know if that level of customization is still possible.
Because Emitters and vendors change so rapidly, I figured a new thread is justified. I suppose the XM-L2 emitter is the best current choice for a P60.
All advices and opinions on a P60 upgrade is appreciated.
A lot would depend on desired runtime, presuming an 18650, not cheapest but this from International Outdoor Store lets you choose modes.
I have several Solarforce drop-ins that I like but they come in 1,3 or 5 modes and the 5 contain strobe and sos.
Try Kaidomain and FastTech but you’ll probably end up getting what you want built for you which I know little about.
Happy hunting!
The first link is pretty good Steve. 4 brightness modes is okay, and runtime isn’t the primary issue. I need the ability to stun panhandlers at night when I’m downtown, so I was looking for something with at least 2.5 amps of drive current.

The whole point is a first level of defense, a more passive level. Its a very reasonable approach. However, if I’m required to turn up the volume, I can certainly do that too.
Let us turn our focus back to replacement P60 Drop-ins.
If you want “blinding” bright then an XM-L2 driven hard [3A+] is what you’re looking for. BLF member E1320 makes outstanding drop-ins but I believe he’s not building any at the moment. There are other custom builders that will create whatever you want, all it takes is $$.
I will suggest you consider buying a SolarForce L2 host, it’s much more rugged & reliable than the UF502, has better heat sinking ability and comes in several variations; L2, L2M, L2N, L2P. Check out Solarforcesales.com.
As TSellers suggests you can build your own P60 drop-in if you have some soldering skills. I’ve built many, it’s not difficult just a bit fussy since you’re working w/ small connections and thin wires.
