Review: Sofirn C8F XPL (Pic Heavy)

The traces look great. There are 2 that cover the whole MCPCB. One that fills the center section out to the emitters. The other from the emitters to the outer edge of the MCPCB.

Cool. Looking forward to your thoughts on the light.

I think they used XPL's for the higher Vf. Seems like a good way to tame down a DD light for the masses.

I'm not up to speed on cells. That sounds like a good hunch because I've never had a protected cell that can belt out 8.8amps with no issue. Also the internal resistance measured as low as my Lii-500 ever reads.

vwpieces and ZozzV6,

Not sure if this helps. The well that the switch boot fits in is about 12.8 - 13mm in diameter. The 14mm boot fits in it nicely. The Q8 boot is a bit bigger. I think too big if I remember correctly. The switch PCB looks identical to the 2nd run Q8 switch PCB from the top side. I didn't have enough time last night to pop out the Q8 pcb to see if the back was the same. The LED's on the C8F switch PCB are green and are quite bright when tested with a DMM. The 2 resistors are 33K ohms.

ZozzV6,

That's great news about the host. Generally, it's a big wrestling match to get a manufacture to provide a host only option. Nice work.

Is a single click on and off? Is turbo in the mode sequence or does it have to be double click each time?

When going triple parallel one thing to note is emitter consistency for the current to be shared among evenly, realizing also that the effective Vf in a triple is “slightly lower” because only a share of the current hits each emitter.

There's only one worthwhile 18650 high discharge cell which tests slightly above 2800mAh down to 2.8V at 0.5A, the HG2. Your figure is just a hair below the one tested by HKJ and that I think is because of the slight protection circuit burden. Someone is now producing protection circuits with additional MOSFETs for 18650 cells, the usual ones sport 2x 8205As but with twice that figure up to 15A continuous is achievable if heat on the MOSFETs is not much of an issue.

Cheers

Thanks ImA4Wheelr,
I started opening pics up in new window last night to get a good look at some things. MCPCB was hard to determine but it did appear to be all trace where possible.
My initial thought was Q8 on that SW board. I have a first run Q8 and changed the LEDs and resistors out before the reports were coming in on led’s going out. Kinda makes sense with TF and Sofirn similarities to several other lights. Might be the leftover Q8 boards from first run. From memory the resistor values sound right too.
I will be switching off the green and putting resistors to my brightness anyway, but funny. I also have a few of the Lexel design OshPark Q8 SW boards to play with. 4 LED too.
I want to keep the translucent smoke black cap, thinking red or possibly yellow under it would look cool. At an only visible at night brightness.

Thanks for going the extra mile. My light will be here before the end of the week. All of my thoughts, questions and concerns could have waited, but this one got me excited more than most. Especially after the reports on the first version. Those issues were address pretty well.

Nice review ImA4Wheelr!
Straight to the point!
I was waiting for it after your teaser review from Amazon few days ago. Sofirn really listens customers and improving after critics with constructive manner
Recently I got SP31 with xp-l2 V6.
9€ shipped. Makes me wonder how on earth they manage to make price this low for such a high quality light!

Triple Luxeon V? :innocent:

Luxeon V has different footprint and very hard to reflo on XP MCPCB. I stay with XP-L HI or XP-L2.
Or If they will want to make XM footprint MCPCB then a triple SST40 would be fun. 6000 lumens

I know “V” is 4040 but it’s doable! Djozz did it on noctigons. It is also possible with modifications on MCPCB traces although that is surgery process.
Somehow I have sensation that if there is enough interested people desiring triple 4040 board they will may make it

I’d grab one off Amazon if they had it with no charger or battery.

I think that is not a big amount as the host buyers. I tried Luxeon MX on XM and XP board but it is very hard to success. Then I ordered 4040 boards from led4power. I have 13 pcs Luxeon MX and I will build one massive light from them with a lot S2+ reflectors

Source: New Osram Oslon Square, testing a 4000K 92CRI typ. emitter

A mod with this sort of emitters would get light output reduced to about ⅔. However, the die area is XP-E class, doesn't it? If so, this means the area brightness is above 2.5 times that of XP-L emitters bla bla… ≈60% additional high-CRI throw. :-D

Cheers

Why are you doing this to me Barkuti?
Just ordered 14 pcs Oslon square 4000K 96 CRI :person_facepalming:
8 for me and 6 for another flashaholic friend.
I stay with XP-L2 for C8F host but I almost putted nichias in me quad VG10S but now I changed my mind. There will be 4 oslon in it.

Sorry ZozzV6!

Depending on the actual Vf of the emitters there could be some driving current difference. If you don't mind sharing those emitters' bin codes we can take a look at the datasheet. It shouldn't be much different, though.

Remember the footprint of the Oslons is also smaller, 3 × 3 mm. Reflow with patience over induction/electric stove.

Cheers

I mean after your comment I gone searching and bought them.

MR-6L-L2, voltage bin is 2.9 - 3.0V, a step above the one tested by djozz.

As spot on over the Planckian locus as these can be; had them on my wishlist a few days ago (it is normal for me to have truckloads of stuff in my wishlists which I'll never :-D buy).

Cheers ^:)

So basically all our wishes are 4040, 3030 or 5050. :student:

I replaced the switch last night to see if that might be the problem from the overheating incident, but the light still behaves the same. Tracy Wan---Sofirn has told me their engineers are looking into what I reported happened to my light.

Took a couple pics of the switch PCB in case anyone needs them. Sorry for the blurry one with the wire blocking the view of one of the traces and thru-holes. If I have the opportunity, I will try to retake that shot. With any of my pics, you should be able to see a full size photo by right clicking and then clicking on View Image.

My C8F arrived today, I am impressed. I like it.
Actually impressed enough to keep it as is for now.

Well, not the spring bypasses. They need to be bigger. And the wires to the MCPCB are kinda long. May as well go bigger here too. Forgot, should wire the SW LEDs. Maybe change the color. Wonder how XP-L HI would look? Otherwise I’ll keep it as is. :innocent:
