[Review] YLP Gekko 1.0 || Samsung LH351D 90CRI, 1x18650 || Excellent UI and Power / Thermal Regulation

Not posting it for you personally, so I don't care what you're interested. Don't know why you protect YLP that much, even cheapest Convoy has better compound in it. Other than this - Gekko is nice flashlight.

My initial post is to show people what they buy before they buy it. I would appreciate if I saw it from someone before I bought my unit. By the way, the comment on vk page of ylp says they plan to release second batch of Gekko - same design, but updated firmware. I'm curious if they change something inside too. We'll see, I may buy one just our of curiosity to see what's new.

It has been discussed in length on fonarevka, including very detailed pictures, this problem is well known for a while.

Yep, but I found it too late. And no one posted it it here in English.

that is true, but do not feel too bad, overall it is not a bad light, it may look bad on the inside, but it may be just enough to remove most of the heat, and keep it alive for few years…. hey, if your light lasts forever, you wont buy new ones, :wink:

Totally agree, don't get me wrong, I already mentioned that it is good in general, except this issue. Sometimes I use my lights for hours at full power, simply changing batteries. This is why heat dissipation is important for me. And hey, it is just a flashlight, if it dies, it is not sensitive for budget to buy a new one.

I protect not YLP but phisics. You have no chance to see defference in warming up without appopriate tools.
Max led temerature in stock is ~87C , max temperature with MX4 thermal paste, thicker MCPCB (noctigon 16) and cleared area under MCPCB, is ~80C. Results from thermal camera/
Gekko is not pocket rocket (like D4 , fw3a and so on.) thermal interface role here not so important.

The quality of flashlight does not meet its price. End of story.

Funny thing. In 2021 I bought two lights, a Gekko 1.0, and a Convoy S2+. Despites some people’s gripes, the Gekko works great in real life. I’m using it about 1-2 hours a night for running or skiing, and it’s about what you’d expect for a 1x18650 light. I’d not know about any issues if I hadn’t read the fonarevka threads (but still liked it enough to buy it with the early BLF discount code). The Convoy quality, on the other hand has been bad for me. First light had a bad driver and died a few weeks in. The replacement light also came with a bad driver. It goes into programming mode randomly. It was $16, and is still somewhat usable so I didn’t bother to get the second replaced. That’s 0 for 2 lifetime with Convoy in my experience.

Boruit D10 for 10$ works great too.

I like the high CRI LH351D in my Gekko. Don’t want to mod to get high CRI, I’ve screwed up enough lights with my inadequate equipment.
