So I bought this huge 12volt 7.5 million CP halogen light a while ago with the intention of converting it to HID. Well that never happened, and since LEDs rival HID now, but with no ramp up time - my HID conversion project is dead. So that left me with this huge light with big output for about 15 minutes. It was of little use to me. Time to mod... I could have upgraded the batteries, but that was going to be expensive in a light I wasn't looking to dump a bunch of money into. So I looked into another bulb. I found an automotive bulb that fit, and this is what I ended up with:
In the above photo you can see the new multi LED bulb. The outer ring of factory LEDs are on.
Above - closeup of the new bulb on low.
Above - It also has a CCFL, and size comparison with my EA4 infront.
The overall output isn't nearly as bright as it was with the halogen, but it is good enough, and it has made the light useful for power outages, and I think it looks cool too. :) --KartRacer31
I just did a quick internet search for it, and didn’t see it anywhere. It is made by Northern Industrail Tools, and it’s called the 7.5 Million CP Spotlight.
When I was looking for one of these big lights, I thought this one was the best combo with the LED ring around the reflector and the CCFL.
Mine is available if you want it - PM me and we can discuss price or trade. —KartRacer31
OOPS - I forgot to address our question about the H3 bulbs Rich, — I believe they do make them. The type of bulb in this light is an H7 @ 12volt. The H3 bulbs which are similar are also only offered in 12volt.
Awh i see I’m not the only one whose tried the led car headlight type bulbs. Nice mod, that’s a great use for those bulbs since they aren’t bright enough to fill in as headlights. I tried squeezing one into my fog lights and broke one of them
Now I know what to do with the spare
WOW, holy crap man you went all out on it! Very nicely done - you took what I would have done to the extreme! Nice! Mine came from Northern Tools, bought it online. I see someone else in your thread about your light noted Norther Tools as a source - I cehcked today, and they don’t cary it any more. This was a fantastic base for mods - and I see you took full advantage of the platform!
You guys gotta be careful showing lights like that!!! Justin will find a way to put 236 LED’s in something that size!!! I live 400 miles from him and felt a tremor clear over here when he just looked at the picture!!!
I like the lights around the outside. I have been playing with that idea for about a month… I want it to look like the Angel Eyes on a BMW… I about have one that works ok but the light just isn’t as clean as I want it to be.
THANKS for sharing the light image. Thats a whopper!
Dan
My pleasure - I’m glad you and so many others like it.
I see two important take-aways from this thread -
Even simple mods can be cool.
It’s worth posting something even if you think it might have been done before. BLF member AlexGt took this light to the extreme a while ago - and his version just might be the ultimate expression of what can be done with one of these lights. The beauty of my post is that it helped bring his post back in view of a whole new BLF audience that might never have seen what he did with this type of light.
Now if I could only figure out a way to get paid for all of the hours I spend here on BLF, life would be really good! —KartRacer31
What I was thinking of doing next was replacing the HID with a Cree MTG-2 led glued to a computer heatsink and driven hard (4 or 5 amps) but I need to check the focal lenght of that reflector with a LED and see how it focuses it.
