DMM’s. Actually this Craftsman I have has been a real good buy. And I’ve had this same model for 10+ years. That tells you the design is good that it’s still around and basically unchanged. Nice thick sturdy leads. For the extra bucks it’s a no-brainer IMO. You might be amazed how often the temperature-probe measuring capable units come in handy with torches and what-nots too - especially to calibrate soldering irons. H) 
And what about auto-ranging? It’s worth it.
The better quality is there in spades, leads, case, and dial-turning smooth snick-snick feel. My general experience with this type of device is that the better made more accurate stuff don’t run on 9V batts either. This one takes but 2 x AA. You see the 9V crap like in those freebie Harbor Fright units. That indicates right there superior more efficiently-running components that don’t require higher volts to get the same job done. Sometimes saving a buck means you’ll be outta luck. This is one of those deals where you definitely enjoy what ya pay for. The one in this thread is just ‘ok’ but it’s not the shizz for the $. It’s no bargain IOW. But what do I know. Ya don’t believe me? Go to Sears and try both out.

i have a craftsman that i have had for years, and im happy with it for my needs.
checked it against the ohms law many times… and there has been no reason to shorten the leads for accurate results, or higher readings
Are they very accurate? Are the factory probes okay?
ive tested mine with several ecig atomizers resistance, amps drawn, and voltage under load. comparing my results to the ohms law, it was within a couple hundredths of an amp, and the attomizer heating up could have caused that
edit: mine is a cheapo craftsman model 82141
Very nice meter at an even nicer price. Go out and grab one or two if you can. I think I paid $20 for mine a few years ago.
some tests with my ecig right now
meter says -
ohms: 2.3
amps: 2.34
volts: 5.4 (bounces around, thats an oprx. average)
ohms law says with that resistance and that amps, id have 5.38v and 12.59a
with the amps and volts read, id have 2.307 ohms resistance…
with that voltage and that resistance, it says id have 2.34783 amps
now the lifepo4 rcr123a batteries sag alot under this kind of load, so its hard to get quite accurate results to start with. but this testing and consistancy in results makes me happy with my $15 meter
Hint, never buy a meter that does not have an auto-shutoff timer…
I’m tryin’ to advise ’em to at least get something with auto-range if they’re gonna buy cheap DMM, and definitely auto-power off which the one I recommend at least has that too. H)
Do you think the ‘bargain’ one here getting touted as a really ‘great deal’ has either? H*ll no. I almost give up.

Cenn-tech (my last DMM) was cheap: $3.99 Brick ’n Mortar HFreight was cheap… $13 or so not so cheap… BLF, y’know?
