Seems to be a bit of interest in lanterns - DIY free lantern

This forum dont like Chrome - thats for sure !

OK half a ping pong ball glued to lid to act as a diffuser , helps spread out the light .

Used a funnel , + Al-foil to push light sideways ..

More effective this way , but not really free any longer .

Hopefully inspires some creations from you guys , your imagination , is the only limiting factor . + Dont forget to share your creations .

Matt

I like it, I like it alot actually. Any comparison pics to the original?

I can only think too much plastic could be soaking up lumens, I wont say much else as i like doing my own things and not feel like im telling someone else what they should do. Especially since i find 75% of my ideas fail. lol

Its 2am here or id be pulling stuff out and trying my hand at one, But i will try for one and post back any results.

hands down winner is the small 3 " round 1" deep styro-foam bowl with an opaque cheap plastic lid . sitting right atop the light with the beam shooting thru the lid.If you were to use the same light all the time a shall sheath glued to the lid would be nice to hold the head of the light .But output beats anything else I've tried .I have lots of semi interesting small bottles that work pretty well but this one is clearly the easiest and brightest.

I'm currently using the 5b20 and i like it alot ...But i'm thinking of upgrading :P...Save the pingpong balls... head off to the local carryout and quiz the waiter next time you eat out as to what size and shape small bowls he has ..5B20's rock

I also made a diffuser using a small white flip top lid off of a small bottle drilled a bigger hole thru it and retained the flip lid to create my own silly version of one of these .

using one of these Clearly my time is worthless .. the real answer is buy one .. here's why ..

look at the beamshots >> http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread.asp?fid=1&threadid=85016

pretty impressive ...and they are cheap .

Ok - First picture is the 2nd variant , and the 2nd pic is the 1st simple variation .

2nd Certainly pushes the light out sideways more

Old clear 35mm film canisters work great as diffusors or deodorant caps.... or just about everything translucent... will do a collection of which caps fit which flashlights, when I find the time... just go to your local drugstore and try them out... the clerks there will be happy to help you ;-)

Looks like the original is the better producer, But if you could just do the domed reflector with no diffuser id like to see that if its no hassle. Im thinking it has too much diffuser the way you took the last pics as the light will have to pass threw the plastic lid twice anyhow and should defuse it enough with out the half ping-pong ball looking addition.

I did go rummaging threw my old CD/DVD spindles and only found 2 shorter versions, It will take both to equal the height yours is. Im gonna let my head dream a while and see what i can come up with that is along the lines you did with the spindle and maybe a second one of my own design.

Fun modding things that cost nothing and can be throw away with no real loss except time is very rewarding at times as it stretches the imagination well.

Left a restaurant today and on the way home I thought ...dang i didn't ask for styro-foam :):)

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you!

Yeah , the trick would be to cut a hole in the lid , so the light hits the diffuser directly [ pink pong ball ] ,I still have some 25 DVD's to burn through to give this another go ...

I found that you need to go thru the lid on the small styro-foam bowls without the lid the beam hits the bowl too hard and it doesn't flood as well as with the lid on .

sitting atop a tailstanded light the bowl looks and acts like a little lamp shade . the light out of it is better than any lantern or diffuser I've ever seen. :)

I took some stuffing my dog had ripped out of a stuffed animal and put differing amounts in the bowl and it seems to mellow out any purples or pinks ..it makes even nastier leds' much more incandecant looking .

Now i am looking for sleeves to attach to the tops of these lids so a light will slip in and I can invert them /hang them too.

these have a great amount of light both top and bottom ....

my suggestion is to try the opaque lid on a styro-foam bowl...works great.
