Should we have a dedicated budget knife page?

The knifewrench is a severely under appreciated bit of kit. Great choice!

Have one of those “Leatherman Like” multi tools that has a flashlight as one of the 22 fold outs, 35 of which you actually use, so what is the name for that?

BLF isn’t solely about flashlights.
There are plenty of threads/posts about knives on BLF, and there are even threads/posts about guns.
That’s why there’s an “EDC Gear for Flashlight Carriers” subforum.
There are even threads/posts that are off-topic, and as long as any of these threads/posts don’t violate BLF rules, they’re allowed on BLF.
I agree with you about not getting into an argument over any of this, but BLF is about a lot more than just flashlights even if you don’t like it. :+1:

Understandable.

I’m talking about the term EDC and the subculture and marketing around it.

“EDC”, as in… every-day carry? Carrying something every day? There’s a “subculture” around that?

Okay, I’m lost.

If I carry a watch or lighter every day, to me that’s just part of my “edc” bundle. Not quite sure how a “subculture” grows around that.

Or even stuff like a leatherperson, phone, or folding umbrella for that matter?

Ya. It’s a whole thing. You weren’t aware of this?

Unno. I’d need to see an example of what you’re referring to.

Until recently, I had no idea there were such things as “Swifties”. I could’ve gone my entire life happily not knowing.

But I’m still mystified at “edc subculture”.

Hi everyone. I’ve never made specific rules about knife threads because so far that topic doesn’t seem to have generated controversy. But I also don’t go out of my way to promote them, because I think this EDC Gear for Flashlight Carriers category is broad enough for those topics.

Regarding signatures, they’re not supported out-of-the-box with this forum platform, they tend to annoy a considerable percentage of users, and they’re not necessary since the user’s profile (https://budgetlightforum.com/my/preferences/profile) is displayed when clicking on their avatar.

Thanks for weighing in, sb!
I figured that there would be no changes made, but we had an interesting discussion anyway. :+1:

As an “old timer” here… you have absolutely NO idea how bad (and competitive) it got with the sig files.

Did you mean to add a category about knives? My answer would be: no. Like stated in a previous post: this is a flashlight forum. But it’s okay with me if someone wants to show a certain knife and creates a thread.

Uh, you joined BLF in 2018, and I joined BLF in 2010.
(I’m sure both of us found BLF before we joined, if you want to make that argument.)
In the last year or so, you’ve read BLF for eight minutes, and I’ve read BLF for nine days.
If you don’t like signatures, that’s fine, but I’ve been here much, much longer than you have.
In fact, I have more posts on BLF than anyone else, so maybe next time do some research before you accuse someone of being a newbie, not that there’s anything wrong with being a newbie.
I’ve never had a problem with the vast majority of signatures on BLF, but it’s never going to happen on Discourse if sb doesn’t want to implement it, which he doesn’t.

I agree with you. I’m from the UK and a knife is a tool, however there is a big culture in America that everything is a weapon. It’s hard to find reviews of knives by Americans that don’t start talking about “tactical use” or “defence”. I’m a member of a UK-based shaving forum, that has a knife thread and the number of members from the US posting switchblades and “tactical” knives was quite shocking, these were knives obviously designed first and foremost as weapons.

It just seems to be part of the culture there, along with guns, and on the basis of the way that discussion went south when we tried to talk about it it seems to be a passionately-held part of American culture that Europeans just don’t understand because we don’t have it, in the same way that a large number of Americans can’t understand how we can go about our daily lives unarmed and feel safe.

Luckily, on BLF, even though a large portion of BLF members are from the U.S., our knife discussions have been pretty tame.
I only get assisted-openers anymore, and they’re similar to switchblades, but I use my knives at tools and not as weapons.
I’m glad that BLF is pretty tame compared to some knife forums out there. :slightly_smiling_face:

I appreciate that knife discussions are low key on blf. I use knives at work, usually these box cutter type…

I meant specifically a budget knife category not a general knife discussion. A place where people can discuss budget knives in the way as we talk about budget lights.

If you post a picture of your newest china made budget knife on bladeforums, they run you out of town on a rail for not having the latest $500 carbon fiber and titanium super steel custom.

BLF has always been a friendly place with people who don’t need the rules spelled out because in general, we behave and treat others with a little respect and patience. Because I like the vibe here, I want to expand it into my other hobby of knives. Specifically budget knives. To be honest, flashlights are not enough on their own to keep me interested but a flashlight and knife forum on one site would be a big hit and would definitely increase traffic and activity.

it’s not on good ole BLF, but sounds like you may want to check out the subreddit “chineseknives”

she single-handedly torched the relaunched G4 channel

I subscribe to r/chineseknives and r/BudgetBlades, but I find most of Reddit to be pretty toxic so I don’t post very much on Reddit.
I don’t mind reading stuff on Reddit, but I hate getting downvoted when I post something that others don’t absolutely love. :man_shrugging:
