People make DIY mirrors for astronomical telescopes, too - they make a glass blank with the right curvature, then chemically plate it (I think) with the reflective coating. That might be another idea to investigate. However they do it, that technique must produce a quality reflective surface on the inside of the curved glass.

They actually do this with broken pieces of ceramic tile and coarse cerium oxide. Doesn’t look like a lot of fun to me.

I’ve thought about just machining an aluminum billet to whatever dimension I’d need. 2000 series aluminum machines and polishes really well…

I know first order reflectors are better. But the spray-paint mirror coating doesn’t work that way. That’s all I was saying. For a first-order mirror, some other option would have to be used.

EDIT: I have a burned out short-arc projector bulb that uses a hemispherical reflector on the back side to recycle backward travel light waves to the front. It has some kind of special surface, probably for maximum reflectivity.

I cut an aperture on the parabolic reflector of one projector bulb by chucking a diamond wheel in a drill press and going around the glass, real slow. Cut pretty easily…

Eep! Y’know how long it’s taking me to just solder the wires to some fake-load resistors for my LED turn signals? At least I did the rears, but still need to do the fronts.

I’m lucky if I can find the time to scratch my bum. That, and all the time I spend here…

I’ve made my own colloidal silver, and it can “plate out” on the glass coffee-pot that I use. Looks ugly on the inside, but from the bottom, it creates a beautiful perfect mirrorlike finish.

Same principle, I imagine.

I actually tried, unsuccessfully, to cut a coated glass Christmas tree ball, but it was so fragile. I think if I had seated the entire ball in Play-Doh or such it would have been easier. I was thinking of using PlastiKote on the outside to reinforce it once cut, but never successfully cut one.

Are you saying that the existing coating on Christmas balls already makes the inside a mirror? I would have thought not. Interesting!

If you get the glass ones. The plastic ones are opaque… unless you get a clear plastic one and coat it yourself. But I suspect the inner surface is not as good as the glass ones. Even the colored glass ones are chrome on the inside.

And what I used to speed up the process, a 2” PVC end cap with a 1/4”–20 bolt with washers and nuts used as a mandrel. I cut the mounting hole oversized so I can adjust center, and used a rubber washer inside, glued in, to help retain the collar while polishing.

You need a coating that has a good reflectivity in the blue range (450-460nm). This is the part of the spectrum that (re-)excites the phosphor of the led.

The measuring spoons I purchased took some effort to polish but provided a decent reflection. I would say that without extensive fitting the reflection was able to be focused on the die with about 80% of the reflected light aligning with the phospohors.

As said though, stainless is only about 70% reflective, silver coating brings that up to 90+

Yes. I’m just saying that only the reflectivity of blue light is what actually matters for you. You don’t need to look at the average reflectivity.

I’m actually running a solid green LED. The question will be if it (Wavien) even matters. It appears Luminus calls their green LED a “converted green” so I am assuming some phospohors, not sure what Cree does (Xpe2).

In general stainless is a relatively poor reflector. In the blue frequencies it is in the mid 60’s for reflectivity iirc, it gets a little higher as frequency increases but not a lot. Silver is highly reflective across the whole visible light spectrum.

Wouldn’t a collar not help much for a phosfor converted green led? because even without colour hardly any blue exits the led, and already green light will not be recycled by the phosfor.

But then I remembered that Wavien actually made a special type of collar for multi-color LEDs in Projectors that had a different shape to encourage the light waves to go back to the die they came from. So, one reflector would concentrate and recycle all the different colors back to their respective dies. I still don’t understand how recycling works that way, but if they made those collars, then somehow they decided that it does work with color dies, not just white.

Wavien collars have a first surface cold mirror coating.
You cannot coat the outside of a glass hemisphere to make a collar, it needs to be on the inside.
If the light travels through any glass it will refract and no longer work as light recycling, it needs to be pure reflection.

It’s a cold mirror so it will work for anything in the visible spectrum, just not UV or IR light.
The “white” colour you see coming from an LED is actually made up of every colour.
There is no “white” colour, it is just a mix of everything else.
