After looking at my flashlight collection and looking at what’s available these days, I realized that I’d like a pocketable light (jacket pocket) with a mix of flood and throw that is in the 4000 lumen range.
That leaves a couple options for the form factor: a single XHP70.2 with a 26650 or 21700 (Wuben T70, Wuben A21, Rofis MR70, Lumintop ODF30C) OR a triple or quad light with a single 26650, 21700 or 3x18650.
I’d like to know the tradeoff between a light with this amount of power and using a single XHP70.2 or a trio or quad of other LEDs. I’m guessing that any light in this category will heat up at the highest levels. Does an XHP70.2 run efficiently at high levels or do multiple emitters work better? (Wait, isn’t an XHP70.2 basically four leds crammed into one?)
I see that XHP70.2 lights are almost always cool white and I prefer neutral so that would steer me toward a triple or quad light with more choices for emitter. Also, XHP70.2 lights don’t often get rave reviews for their beam beauty, so there’s that.
I’m kinda leaning toward an Emisar D4s or the upcoming Sofirn SP36. I’d look towards the Rofis if they offered NW emitters but that’s only for the side led. Are there any other lights that I should look into? I’d like to spend somewhere in the $70 or less range.
I just recently purchased a D4s with the 5000k xpl hi and it’s pretty hard to beat, even against my Acebeam EC50 gen 2 in neutral. I like the user interface a lot, the color rendention is wonderful, and throw/flood combo is much better than my xhp70 reflector light. You really can’t go wrong with the D4s as a high power pocket light that has a very solid runtime.
I second RockJunkie on the Emissar D4S at over 4,000 lumens and though it’s a little heavy with a Liitokala LI-50, I still like it a lot! I also have the Wuben T70 and it’s a great light. The brighter nod definitely goes to the Emissar but the Wuben is nicer in hand. I.e, preference.
I don’t consider the A21 in the same category because it’s more compact.
I’ve seen tests of a single xhp70.2 pushed to crazy numbers (9,000lm) without hurting it. Though heat is probably not manageable in a small-medium light going that hard, I’m waiting for someone to offer one pushed harder than Wuben did.
You might also consider the Sofirn C8F, triple XP-L HI emitters. With a coupon its around $33 with a nice 21700 cell & charger. It has ramping UI like the Emissar offerings which I love! I’m getting one….
