Sky Ray 3800-have I made a mistake....help please !!!

Hi everyone,

I’ve just ordered a sky ray 3800 without really doing any in depth research…I know, hands up shoot me now…lol.
Anyway I never really knew there was such a dedicated community on here so I’d like to join all the fun and pick your brains if I may…?

So,after the order was sent I suddenly came across some info about the sky ray burning up…!!!

Is this something I should be concerned about,do these things burn out or would this be a rare event…?

Also whilst I’m here…what would be the best batteries to suit this light and do I need a special charger or will any everyday AA charger do the job…?

I hope you guys can help me out

Many thanks in advance guys

Nigel-Devon—UK

Hi Nigel, do you have a link for the light? I do believe its this one that earned the name “fryray” ……

Thanks for getting back to me gords,

This is the link to the actual one I ordered…

http://gb.dinodirect.com/sky-ray-high-power-3800lumens3x-cree-xm-l-t6-led-flashlights.html?vn=RGlub2RpcmVjdEZ1Y2s&AFFID=33

I’m also still unsure of what batteries to use,3100mah seem to be a popular choice but the prices vary so much…?

if its from dino it will burn >)

Here’s the search results

http://budgetlightforum.com/search?q_as=skyray%203xt6

Be worth doing some reading.

Cell wise, Samsung’s, Sanyo’s, Panasonic’s and LG’s are all good cells, you want protected ones as this light uses two cells in series.

Fasttech has very good prices and shipping is pretty quick to the uk in my experience. There are plenty of threads on fasttech with lots of links, I suggest hiding your credit card and looking sober as you’ll find much temptation.

If you still can, I would personally cancel the order with dino direct, I’m not keen on them and fasttech carries the Fandy fire version of the skyray king, a much better light in my opinion and the opinion of many others.

Good luck pal and welcome.

Bugger…the order has already been processed,oh well,at least it didn’t break the bank thank god.

What about these batteries for it…I cant believe how hard it is to buy a bloody half descent torch to walk the dog up the fields lol

Its not as though I have to look out for lions and tigers, its just the rabbit holes…

You get what you pay for… If you dont want to have a wienie roast over your flashlight? Gonna have to shell out the duckies on batteries. I wouldnt trust ultrafire. I havent owned any… But have have heard stories with negative outcomes.

Don’t get those batteries, anything which claims over 3000 and isn’t a ‘well-known’ brand such as Panasonic/Sanyo/Samsung is basically a lie. The higher the claim the less honest the company/seller and probably the crappier (and more dangerous!) the battery.

The best value at the moment would be protected Sanyo 2600 or Panasonic 2900 from fast-tech, along with an Xtar WP2 or Nitecore intellicharger i2/i4.

Thanks for the info Dale, what batteries would you recommend for this torch then,I haven’t got a clue to be honest. I don’t mind spending out a few quid,I’d rather buy right first time then not have to worry.

Its quite a minefield is’t it…?

There is one thing that I’m not too keen on and that’s the light just cutting out, this could be quite dangerous especially in the woods where its pitch black with lots of ground level obsticles, so better have top notch batteries I can rely on than cheap and chearfull one’s which will not deliver.

Unfortunately the SR3800 has an aggressive low voltage cut-off where it just shuts down. Fast-tech have some really good deals at the moment on high quality/low-budget single 18650 back-up lights that would be perfect for that situation though, search ‘Convoy S2/S3’.

If you want a higher quality primary light then there are some good deals on ‘Convoy’ brand dual 18650 lights on fast-tech too, much higher quality than the generic SR3800 from dinodirect.

Thanks for all the info chaps, looks like I’ve still got some research to do…alll good though.

Brain melting down and memory shot…!!!
Now its becoming a chore and not enjoyable anymore…grrrrr so many to choose from and I still don’t even know what I’m supposed to be looking for…!!!

What would be a the best buy for 4 cells and a charger for around £20-£25 guys, please help me out,I don’t even know what the best mah to get, protected or unprotected…. and then there’s the charger…!!!...a link to an ebay site would be very much appreciated guys.I’m starting to wish I never brought the thing and its not even here yet.

Hi Nigel, I found this site today.

I’ve not yet ordered, but I did ask the question on here and got a favorable response, I’m also hoping that because they are in the eu, we can by-pass duties, but I need to check on that.

I’ve linked you an intellicharge i4 charger, respected on here and can charge four cells, and keeppower 3100mah cells, I’m not sure the skyray can take the 3400mah cells.

Incidentally, you could get away with a c8 xm-l, if you don’t need to light to spot a flying ball of fur, I don’t know what your dogs like off the lead. If you do fancy a light like I describe though, let me know, I’ll put one together for you.

Thanks Gords,

These product are slightly too much for me I’m afraid but thank you so much for the info.I might just try a combo deal from somewhere,I’m done now with all the eye strain on the screen to be honest. I just want to order very simply and with as little effort as possibly now.Surely it cant be this hard to get a couple of bloody batteries and a compatable charger…?

All I want is a reliable bright torch to walk the dog, something a little brighter than my £9.99 cree 3watt for Aldi…

Thanks again mate,if you see a charger and 2 or 4 batteries on your travels and suitable for the sky ray 3800 then I’d love to hear from you again.

Cheers Buddy

Gords, do you think these will be ok…?

Definitely not, let me have a look at fasttech, those cells are likely as bad as ultrafires, or worse (no one makes a cell above 3400mah yet)

The charger, is not something I’d want plugged in in my house either.

For now, a couple of cells and a two bay charger will do you, but I wouldn’t shop on eBay for either, unless you find torchy the battery boys shop….

I use one of these quite a bit, but some people have reported issues, don’t know if they were fake chargers or not.

Try to remember $1 = about 67p.

Gords your a star, thank you so much for taking the time to help. I’m glad I never ordered these then…lol http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UKAj853-4-x-Ultrafire-18650-4600mah-Torch-Protected-Rechargeable-Battery-Charger-/200881132350?\_trksid=p2045573.m2042&\_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D5062039802094982276%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D3%26sd%3D160803409179%26

EBay is a dangerous place when looking at li ion cells, fasttech has proved pretty trustworthy, I got some unprotected Samsung’s from them, if it was a single cell convoy light from fasttech, I’d have no issue recommending them, but in a two cell light, you want the protection to hopefully protect against reverse charging (their also flat top, so won’t connect together) since the difference is a dollar or so, may as well go protected.

I know those cells and charger come in a little over your budget, but they are good cells and an ok charger.

I’m intending to get an i4 soon, and probably another 26650 charger as I’m finding I like 26650 lights more.

You can always buy more cells next pay packet, once you have a set up, its easier to add to.

As someone said above, its worth having a single cell light as a back up, but your cheaper Cree will do that for now, of you feel you want an 18650 tube light in the future, drop me a pm as I can probably sort you one out, I’ve bought up a few and have one host ready for assembly, it was sent by mistake (wrong colour) but I’m going to build it up anyway, it might suit you when your ready.

That’s it no more research,I’ve done enough to last a lifetime.

I’ve decided to go for some of these Gord, they were on one of the links you sent me,I’m also going to go with the Trustfire charger as well.

Thanks for your help Gord, top bloke.
