Just ordered and got the Skyray King from Lightmall @$75usd and Man am I pissed-off reason being when I tested it with Xtar18700 and TF2400mah 18650, and hola, 1 of the 3 Xml is not lighted up.
Anybody can advice me what route I can take to solve this problem?
Before I'd do that I'd take off the bezel and reflector and make sure all my wires to the emitters are soldered and secure. Next I'd pop the driver loose and have a look there for a loose wire as well. If you can solder it's an easy fix. If that's not the issue then send it back as the driver may be defective. It just sounds to me like a wire came loose in transit, at least that's what I'd hope for if that was my light.
johnny, care to explain in details how do I go about popping the reflector and driver off,coz I just scratched the edge of the reflector with my fingernail while trying to dig it out.
That reflector probably has a screw holding it in from the back side, so don't try to pry it out! You would see the screw under the driver board.
If it was me, I'd make sure the LED's were all good and if it's a driver failure, I'd say the hell with it and do the 7135 route. Better than returning it and waiting.
Sorry to read about your problem, first one I've heard of so far. If I were you, I wouldn't touch it. Simply contact the retailer and have it replaced. In order to properly check the wiring for the LED's, you'd have to remove the driver board, which is glued in from the inside of the flashlight. Once that is removed, you'd be able to remove the reflector by unscrewing it from the underside.
Even if you did take it apart, there is no guarantee you'd be able to fix it. Once the retailer examines the light and determines you had your hands in it, they may decide not to replace the light. Best to leave it as it and send it back.
i'd test at the led first..just desolder the wires at the bad led and solder 2 wires directly..then attach a battery to these 2 wires direct drive and see if it lights up..this is the easiest way to learn a lot..if it lights up then there is a driver/connection problem..if it doesn't it's the led..
I took out the driver board as per dorpmuller by carefully by prying off the adhesive with a pen-knife until it popped out, took out the reflector, and direct drive each emitter, indeed that 1 emitter did not light up. Just for info, the king uses 16mm Xml, luckily I got a 16mm xml (ordered a 20mm one)sent wrongly by Led-DNA and soldered into it. And Walla.. Its working as it should have been.
Any ideas or opinions on how or what compensation should I ask from light mall?
I've always gone by the "fix it yourself" or "return it for another one". If I decide to fix it myself, instead of returning or exchanging the item, I never ask for any type of compensation because I took it upon myself to fix it.
Others may disagree, but that's just how I feel about it.
Agreed. You may be hard pressed to get any kind of compensation since you took it apart, which usually voids any warranty. You could always try to ask for something, assuming you documented the burned out XML prior to replacing it. If not, than I would just be happy it was fixable.
Yup,agreed with you, I have no proof of the defect now that I fixed it. Only thing I have is the receipt invoice for proof of purchase and I dun think those China seller will entertain me,so I guess I have given up hope of any form of compensation.
I’m trying to dismantle my mimic, and I’m not getting how to get that driver board out. I took the button off, but there’s no leverage there to get to the board that I can see. Am I just being to gentle in my prying?
In reply to Jalben I don’t get this torch apart. For sure not with a pen knife. Any suggestions? Last option the grinder, but then everything is too late
Does anyone have instructions on getting the driver board out of the Skyray King??
I noticed some light coming out of my King while it was just sitting on the shelf, untouched. I thought it was odd because I had the light “locked out” buy turning it 1 full turn CCW from closed. One the the three LEDs will always stay on in “moonlight mode” any time the head is on the light, regardless of how loose or tight the head is (one turn, three turns, etc). So now my light goes High, Low, Moonlight - with no “Off” lol.
The only way I can get the single LED to shut off is to loosen the bezel on the front. Once you loosen the bezel and take the pressure off of the glass, the single moonlight LED shuts off. If I take the o-ring out from behind the glass, the LED will not go into moonlight mode, but then I lose the ability to keep out water/moisture. As soon as I put the o-ring back on and tighten the bezel down all the way, the glass pushes on the reflector and one of the three LEDs goes into moonlight mode. If I loosen the bezel 1/8 of a turn, it shuts off the LED as well, but then there is an ugly gap and the bezel is loose.
I was thinking that perhaps the reflector is shorting to one of the LED pads and that maybe I should open up the reflector hole a little bit to stop this from happening. To do that though, I’d need to take out the board, then unscrew the bolt that holds the reflector in place… I’m not really sure if the reflector could be conductive or not though because I’m not sure what it’s made out of…
