Small engine interference filter

Not sure where to ask this question but here goes. I have a 12 volt battery powering an analog radio receiver on a go kart. The receiver is picking up interference from the motor sometimes causing the receiver to falsely trigger. Would putting a capacitor across the positive and negative leads help filter this interference out?

Have you googled auto radio noise filter? There’s a lot of simple gadgets mounted inline in the power wire, available to accomplish this

Thanks , I will give it a try.

You need to shield the spark plug and spark wire. Metal can around plug (top and bottom)

and on spark wire, take this to engine block to ground it. This was used on old power

generators to cut down on static noise from the arc of the spark plug.

Thanks for the tip. I have tried resistor plugs . Shielding the plug and wire will be difficult. Maybe shielding the antenna wire will help. Funny thing is interference only happens on 1 or 2 out of ten. All receivers are the same . I have tried tuning the receivers also but no help. The one I added the capacitor to maybe is working better now. Time will tell.

When ever we had problems like this when putting ham radio’s in our cars. We would always find a different ground location for the radio. You can move your ground to different locations until you find the sweep spot. Always worked for us.

To further what Todd wrote, if you haven’t already, get a nice heavy ground strap and run it from the engine to the frame of the go-kart. Don’t just rely on the mounting bolts for proper engine grounding.

A1 suggestion right there. Excellent!

I had totally forgot about that. Thank you sir.

Both good suggestions.
