With the proliferation of smart phones, I was wondering if anybody is beginning to use high CRI LEDs in these applications? Seems like it would be a natural use since they are often utilized with the integral cameras. Not sure it would ever displace my EDC but if there was some nice tint, nice CRI options out there certainly would allow me to downsize the EDC and use it only as a back up!

I think we can ask maukka or some other members with proper test tools to check few phones they have around.
Its sad to see that even some LED on smartphones have better light quality than most big brand flashlights.
Yea my Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G uses 2 high CRI LEDs on the back and its bright but of course the light is not focused so even though its bright a lot is wasted.
I’m in the process of modding my Moto G7 (currently running LineageOS, might try Havoc and /e/ as well), the LED is on its own board buried deep behind everything. Once I get a few more weeks of life out of this battery, I’m replacing it and the cracked screen, and while I’m in there going to take a look at the emitter. It’s green tinted so I plan to replace it no matter what, possibly with an E21A if it fits. Was going to write up a short post about it in the daily thread…
I think the better brand phones do use NW high cri leds for the flash. Some have dual leds for things like skin tone color reproduction. My Note 8 has a single high cri NW led that actually has a really nice timt and is really bright. I confess I have used it as a backup.
None of the devices we have at home have >90 CRI flash/flashlight, but we don’t have very recent stuff, except a GTab 7+ which has the highest CRI (not very portable though
