Solar Garden Lanterns

I am looking for outdoor decorative solar light deals . I prefer the hanging lantern style but am open to spiked ones also . They all seem overpriced this spring. The best I could find were these: Paradise Set of 6 Solar Crackled Glass Hanging Lights onShepherdsHook - QVC.com
If anyone knows of any similarly priced lights or less , please post links . They don’t have to be cracked glass . Thanks .

Try Costco. I’ve seen similar lights there this spring. I don’t think the prices are any better, but perhaps the quality is.

About 4 years back, I was helping pops out at home and bought three different ‘packs’ to place around his 1 acre suburban spread.

His new black lab was in the chewing phase and she pulled them out as fast as I could stake them, but they worked and looked nice around the driveway and in the gardens.

I went back last December to tend to him and got the bags of pulled/chewed lights out of the workshop and cleaned up the batteries and cobbled together some ‘still’ neat looking ones and replaced them.

Most still worked, some NiMH batteries were dead, but just get a few sets and see what you see. They’re not all that expensive at Lowes and Home Depot and they do look nice at night.

You’re not going to get 10 years out of any of them, but you’re not out a lot of cash.

I’m sure that there are some hanging versions, but I was looking for staked ones, at that time.

The ones sold on QVC are no better than the dollar store lights but with a holder included and a fancy globe. The globe is 3” in diameter so you can guess what size the solar panel is since it is smaller than the light. The solar panel looks to be about the size of the panels found on $1 lights. They really don’t give you much information.

I have a hanging lantern which goes under the name Solar Powered LED Candle Lantern. I picked mine up at a garage sale. It’s a nice little lamp but I see they go for about 10 bucks each on Ebay from a US seller. What you want to look for are a decent sized solar panel and good sized NIMH battery inside the lamp. This one has a 1200 mAh NIMH battery which should run it most of the night. None of these are going to light your garden, just be a pleasant pathway marker. If you want to experiment with inexpensive lights buy one or two of these from overseas sellers. If you find one you really like buy more. Takes about 14 days to arrive so you have to be patient.

well kinda/sorta on topic, so here goes….

since i am cheap, i have found that the outdoor solar lights
are “good enough” to recharge the AAA size. i buy 3 or 4
at the Dollar Store ($1.25 now) when i find the AAA’s
inside. they are removable, so i switch out batteries.
i have never found 18650’s or AA rechargeable
solar lights within my budget limits.

I’ve got quite a few outdoor solar lights. The only ones that last and give off a decent amount of light aren’t pretty or decorative. Arilux used to make some decent larger ones, the smaller size model the PIR sensor simply doesn’t pick up any movement. I have noticed their latest light appear to be a bit junky.

Leclstar 368 LED models work well and are capable of lighting large areas, but aren’t exactly decorative. They have two 18650 batteries inside.

Avoid anything with an epoxy encapsulated solar cell as they quickly turn yellow and craze. Water ingress is also a problem with cheap decorative solar lights.

Lots of yard lights will charge AA, try finding old ones that just need a new battery, all the 18650 and 14500 ones I have checked out are soldered.

These are out of stock but they are very bright and actually light up a walkway, 4 will cover a pretty good length of the walkway if you are keeping an eye out for snakes.

The sales page keeps saying they use AA batteries but they must have switched them to 14500s.

The older wedge shaped Arilux ( SL-10, SL12 and similar) and the Leclstar 368 LED model all have a pair of normal 18650 cells that can be easily changed. No soldering.
