Well… It was one of those days!
I love the Olight s30 and it seems so do my family and friends as I keep buying one for myself to find another who wants it. The price of the s30 has gone up so I planned on buying one more for myself to keep. It came in the mail today and I was excited to start the process of modding it to a quad xpg3 direct drive. It didn’t work out as planned.
You may know that Olight glues the threads on these flashlights. I was aware of this as I had already modded a handful of them. I was able to open up all of those lights with a little effort so I expected the same with this one. Nope!
I started twisting. And twisting. I ran it under hot water and twisted some more. Nothing. I tried rubber and leather straps. I tried wet rags and tried my hands some more. Nothing! I reluctantly moved to a channel lock type wrench. I tried protecting the surface of the light with cardboard, but that just slipped so I moved to the wet rag I tried earlier. I squeezed and twisted, but the thing would not budge. Finally there was a little twist, but the sound I heard did not sound like threads breaking loose but more like finger nails on a chalk board. I told myself “No! No! No!” Then I looked and it was “yes yes yes”. The teeth from the wrench ground down through the rag and put a scratch in the bezel. I told my self that the light was for me and that the scratch did not matter, but I wasn’t very convinced.
I put the light under some more hot water and after some more work, I finally got the bezel to twist off. Now I moved on to the joint of the head and battery tube. I won’t event describe the process in detail, I will let you use your imagination. Through the process I migrated from hands, to hands and rag and wrench, to rag and wrench and another wrench, to NO rag and two wrenches. :rage: I could not seem to stop myself and determined that I would not stop without victory. I’m sure many of you can relate to this ego puffed wreckless need to conquer and force objects to submit to our stubborn will. Maybe not? Anyway, I now have a brand new Olight s30 that looks like it’s been riding in a toolbox for the past ten years.
I’ve decided to see if there is an interest for a scratched up light. It works fine so there may be someone who doesn’t mind, but IDK? If you are interested, I will send it to anyone in the continental USA for $25 shipped. I don’t know if this is a fair price or not, but for any less, I would probably keep it for myself. Let me know if you are interested or atleast share your sympathy.
I took the light apart to clean up the threads. If you are interested and plan on modding the light anyway, I will leave the light in pieces as seen in the last picture below. If you want to use the light as is, I can put it back together for you and it will be ready to go “like” new
