Not many detailed pictures of the builds. Thanks to Match’s 15 min minimag mod I got creative. This one is based on a brass p60 that I cut the top ring off then soldered a piece of copper on top of that, lapped it and the star then added artic alumina. I know a p60 isn’t much of a heatsink but this is more of a “wow” light anyway.
This one was by far the most tedious mod I’ve done. All the pieces are so tiny! Basically I built the pill out of 5/16 copper tubing, a 1971 copper penny, heatshrink tubing, JB weld, a 7135 chip and a Cree XP-G. It was originally an XP-G2 from Illumination supply but the TIR I fitted somehow tore the dome off and ruined the led.
Yeah, I found out lol. I ended up taking a 1/8 drill bit and removing some material from the inside of the TIR. Now it works perfect. Just waiting on the 10440 to get here. Right now I just have 3 button batteries and a spacer powering it so its not getting the full 350mA. I believe the tail cap reading was only 100mA.
Nice collection of some nice lights. Thanks for sharing them with us. I’m glad I’m not the only one that Match made spend lots of money and build things.
Thanks! Now if only I had a way to make a threaded pill so I could further mod the 612. I want to do a XP-G2 on a Noctigon board driven by the Qlite I have now. Right now if I run it on high the led starts to smoke slightly after a minute or two.
I hold Match and a few others personally responsible for my Minimag addiction. I’ve never done one but eventually I’d like to do a D-Mag just for the elbow room and to ease the eye strain. I like the challenge of a Solitaire but they make my fingers ache. Nice collection, you should post your next build.
I have two 2D Mags that I would like to do something with. Possibly a MT-G2, just gotta learn a bit more about how to drive it first. Also, I’m dreading it but I’ll be rebuilding the solitaire soon. It works perfect but I would like to perfect the appearance of the pill. Plus I have a small 1.5mm gap between the body and the head that I would like to close up so I don’t over tighten the light and hurt the emmiter again. Maybe I’ll add one more 7135 too.
If only there was an 8mm driver with a single 7135 available.
Both Oldlumens and I have done a number of solitaire mods. Either of us could be a source for suggestions or ideas. Click on either name to bring up a list of threads or just ask for a link if you wish.
My biggest disadvantage is my lack of tools for this. I have over $15000 wrapped up between my Snap-On boxes and tools. I use to restore cars and build hot rods so I had plenty of fabrication tools. I built a 1138hp LSX powered 34 ford that went to sema among many other cars, but I had to sell those fabrication tools to fund my general maintenance and diagnostic tools now that work on modern cars. I’ll definitely look into those threads though. I love seeing different ideas to modding. Plus I love learning new trades and skills.
Neither OL or I are what you’d call high tech modders. A dremel is very helpful but in reality I use snips,a tubing cutter, and file or sandpaper just as much. Sweating copper or brass is easily done on the stove resting on a pie tin or even a soup can lid, though for solitaire parts you could do it with your iron. I hope you enjoy the reads, I know I do and will look forward to seeing your magmods.
