Sometimes it pays to check your spare parts

  • I recently acquired my first Solarforce torch, a L2N-grey, which I credit Foy’s review for the motivation. Doing some searches here on the L2 family I noted discussions about AR coated and UCL lens replacements as all but the HA3 models are supplied with plain glass lenses. The upshot was that a 28.0 x 2.0 mm replacement, such as those offered from KD, would be an optimal fit although several other close sizes, most notably from flashlightlens.com, had also been used successfully in various users’ L2 torches.
  • Among my flashlights I have a number outfitted with UCL lenses which I do like. I noted that the L2 lens size seemed to be in the same neighborhood as my custom Mr. Bulk Lionheart purchased in late 2004. I did some checking and found that it indeed was very close as it had a 27.8 x 1.9 UCL. Unfortunately this size is no longer available from flashlightlens.com. Then it struck me that I might have a spare. So I searched my parts and found that I did indeed have one bought in February 2005  So why not give it a try?
  • Bingo! I now have a UCL lens in my L2N.
  • So yes, it pays to check your spare parts. You never know what treasures you might find!

nice!

I never throw away anything…. EVER (when it comes to lights)

I keep all my old drivers and emitters… you never know when you are going to need something in a pinch…

especially with lead times from china being 2-4 or more weeks for a $1 part… better to just keep everything!

I’ve recycled a few of the 20mm drivers pulled in favour of nanjgs, I have emitters knocking about that will do to get something up and running. As for lenses, I’ve not ventured down that path yet. We’ll see. I do tend to buy more than one of things I need, just in case
