Could someone enlighten me on why the SST-50's are around three times the price of the XM-L's?
I've not been able to figure out if there is a reason other than price gouging behind it, are they possibly much more expensive to make for some reason?

The SST-50 (and SST-90) were introduced more than a year ago and the XM-L is brand new.
Also the Lumiled leds are one of the few leds that are rated for 5 Amps and higher.
For a flashlight it is no problem to go beyond the 3A of an XM-L but this is really a niche market
Most of the powerleds are produced for things like cars. streetligting etc. were durability is first.
maybe in the future there will be a lite SST-50 ( SST-40 ?) or a price reduction
but for now Lumileds has a broader (output) range in leds and is more likely to get contracts so they can dictate price
I think maybe I didn't ask the question the right way round anyway :P
I guess the XM-L's are surprisingly cheap, especially given how new they are.
You're comment about street lighting has reminded me, that I really should contact my local council and see if I can get some details about the new LED street lights they have been putting up around my town.
Hmm, now just to think of a way to phrase that as to not sound tooo nerdy...not sure that's possible :)
