That reminded me of the time after some hard partying when I woke up in the morning and noticed I had to hustle to make it to work by 7 am, without showering I jumped into my clothes and then the car and was doing fine, the sun was coming up and I would make it, except that I noticed Burger King was open and then noticed other businesses were open that weren’t morning businesses, it seems it was 7 pm.

I’ve not followed this news/politics in the USA. It’s a shame there’s not a “don’t care, just decide and stick to one timezone all year”…

At the moment, the split is between Standard and make it permanent and DST and make it permanent… So if you are one of the people who chose these, would you prefer the current situation OR to permanent Standard/DST opposite to what you want?

I suspect “time is an illusion” votes are from those of us who are from the rest of the world…

I actually like Lighbringer’s suggestion of summer opening times… Lots of touristy places have peak/off peak opening hours, so it’s not so hard to imagine rolling that out a bit wider. Might have difficulty with things like schools changing kids attendance hours and parents workplaces remaining fixed and therefore inconvenient…

Something I have never heard anyone specifically mention is how many minutes difference there are between the sunrise and sunset times at the east and west boundaries of the same time zone.

For example, in the Mountain Time Zone here in the US, there is a difference of 50 minutes between West Wendover, UT and Burlington, Colorado (west and east sides of Mtn Time at pretty much the same latitude). The folks in Burlington, CO are already seeing the sun almost an hour earlier than those in West Wendover, UT, but both are using the same clock time. Sunrise 6:26 AM (east side) and 7:16 AM today (west side)

Add to that the fact that sunrise and sunset are also influenced by one’s latitude. The farther north the earlier the sun rises in summer than down in NM or further south. So nothing is going to make everyone happy all the time. And not everyone in one location may be happy all year round if the clock gets set to the same standard all year.

It is the switching back and forth that bugs me. It is especially awkward when neighboring Arizona does not observe DST except for the Navajo Nation. But the Hopi Nation does NOT observe DST like the rest of AZ; never mind the that the Hopi Nation is entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation.

Leave the clocks alone and go with the average that was set in the 1800’s. Mankind has a sketchy record of making changes in the natural world without having unintended consequences.

I heard that in one time zone, I can’t remember where, it would not get light out until 9am because they lived near the western edge. This is if we went to permanent DST.

While the phenomenon of last call twice at a bar during the fall transition to DST is amusing I’m willing to give it up so that we stop changing the farking clocks twice yearly. I have a minor preference for standard time, but that’s small small potatoes.

I can’t see the poll results at the new link in the first post. No big deal really, but thought I would mention it.
I vote for just pick one and stay with it. I have a slight preference for DST for the extra “clock” time of daylight in the evening. Particularly since I sleep late in the morning generally. Retirement is sweet in many ways… especially being able to schedule activities without regard for “clock” time, for the most part.
