No those straight razors are unusable, you canât sharpen them, it is just good to open mail envelops or to âtortureâ them. But you will find tons of âsecond handâ straight razors on ebay.
If you are looking for good or excellent great value straight razors, you canât go wrong with those made in âSheffieldâ (Wade & Butcher âsometimes very expensive, very âhypeâ), Joseph Rodgers, Joseph Elliot, Mappin Webb, Frederick Reynolds, Greaves & Sons, etc, there are so many manufacturers). There are old, frequently more than 1 siecle and sometimes they just waiting a careful hand to restore them for the next 50 yearsâŚbefore going in other hands.
There is so much to know about great value straight razors. 5 or 3 years ago you could buy them for about 20$ if they needed some work to be restored, actually it is more about 80$âŚbut it is possible sometimes to find the one that will be ignored because there is a lot of other good quality pieces at the same time that will attract biddersâŚgood luck.

What exactly are you looking for? I mean, the options are limitless really. From custom jobs that are truly works of art to just about anything in between. The price is the biggest factor. You can spend $10 on a razor, you can spend $1000. The Chinese Gold Dollar brand razors will work good if you know how to work them properly. The Badger and Blade and SRP sites are great. you can look at their classified sections and really come up with some great stuff for great prices.

It is the same problem than in flashlights world with budget chinese flashlights. Those who bought budget stuff and use it, say that it does his work, those who bought high end stuff say that budget is no good.
But you are right, you need to know how to work Gold Dollar properly and it is sometimes discouraging and dissuading for the beginner, because it is more complicated to obtain a good edge with them than with better steel straight razors.
The problem is you canât buy knives on eBay in the UK, itâs stupid! The Gold Dollar I have seen is common on Aliexpress and I read the controversial post on the suggested forums (CPF style elitism tho?). Perhaps my best bet is local antique store or car boot sales etc. I donât want to spend much, half of it is just to have one in my collection tho I will definitely give shaving with it a crack. Budget is best VFM and in my mind thatâs usually Chinese knock-offs lol

they come up for sale now and then on britishblades.com forum. I picked up an nice old one last year for ÂŁ10. You could place a wanted on the said forum and see if anyone offers you something?
Ebay is probably âgeo-localisingâ you so it will probably not help if you are logging to ebay.com or to any others: ebay.fr, ebay.de, etc. Ebay will detect that you live in the UK.
But did you try this tip ?
Do they ban words like âstraight razorsâ (US) or âcut throatâ (GB) or âcoupe-chouâ (French) or ârasiermesserâ (German) to block bids with this type of blade ? (In âLocationâ menu, donât forget to tick the box âworldwildeâ if you do your searches with those words).
Or do they ban categories ?
Most of the time, in ebay.com, straight razors are under this categorie and sub-categories:

Try to browse through them.
Try also to change your language setting in your web browser, if it is set to âEnglish-UKâ, erase it and set it to âEnglish-USâ and try to log you in ebay.com. Sometimes ebay is blocking some bids for âlegal issueâ and sometimes, changing the language setting solves the problem.

Kriegar straight razors are made with terrible steel, you would not even want this crappy steel for a knife.

Man do I feel ignorant! I did not even know these existed. I always assumed the a straight razor used disposable razor blades just like todayâs standard razors. I didnât know they were made of a sharpenable steel. Very intriguingâŚ
Nah, I actually remember barber shops where you could get a professional shave with a straight-razor. Big thick leather strop hanging off the chair to put the sharpest edge on it, even. Would probably last a lifetime.
Speaking of old-timey stuff, I still canât get over what some of those wacky little Chinese fellas are still doing today. This!

I collect vintage razors. I have everything, straights. disposable straight, single edge double edge and injectors. they all have pros and cons. I have approx 30 double edge including both 3 piece and the butterfly style. You really need to figure out what you want and learn that razor. It is just as addicting of a hobby. If you just want a straight for the purpose of having it, then just watch on ebay and find one you like the look of. If you want to shave in the old style there are hndreds of options. I really like the disposable blade straights. some have their own blades. some take a double edge blade and then some take a DE blade that you snap in half. No disposable razor will shave you that closely. They also wonât cut you like the old straights. WHen I put one of my really good blades (Feather) in it it removes any blemish on my face without effort. I donât even feel it, there is just a spot that starts to bleed. Sometimes a little and sometimes a lot. Happens a lot less now. Be prepared once you get a razor there are soaps creams oils and all manner of items to help you shave better. Brushes, good god donât start collecting brushes. I have about 40 of them and they can range from $5 up to $1000 the %5 will work just fine the big difference is the feel on your face. I have expensive and I have cheap and most of the time I never touch the high end brushes. Soas are the same. there are cheap products that cost a few dollars and will last for months and then there are soaps that cost $50 and will go about a month. I have tended to use the middle of the road soaps as well. If you decide to do it just know there is a serious learning curve in using an old style razor. You never push the razor against your skin. Also the angle you shave with is almost flat against your skin. Good luck and have fun.
