I am looking for a light in the $50 ballpark, that would be good for casting light on a mountain side for long exposure night photography.
Needs to have good throw, and be USB rechargeable.
So far, the Astrolux FT03 XHP50.2 at the top of my list.
Would this be any use to you?
A bit over budget - but it is “in the ballpark”.
Be fun to have mounted on top the house …
How far away is the mountain?
How big is the mountain?
Do you want to light the whole thing?
If there is any distance involved, back scatter is going to be a problem if you and the light are far away.
A few portable camera strobes work very well for some of this type of stuff.
Back in the film days, I’d open the shutter and send some friends off up the hills with some strobes.
Had them bang away at interesting formations.
With the lights closer to the subject and the camera at a distance, this kept things nice and crisp.
Trouble was, with film, you never knew what you were going to get until it was developed.
Got some neat looking shots sometimes.
This worked better in caves where there was no ambient light.
All the Best,
Jeff
Cant really tell you those kind of specifics, situations change.
I have a few lights that are more of a wall of light, or large hot spot, which can cast a bit of light that far,
but I am after something with more reach, I would rather not have a TINY hotspot since I dont find that very useful.
Thats what led me to the FT03, is seems like a decently small hotpost that is still a useful size, together with enough lumens to get the job done.
I dont intend to cast light on the entire mountain at once, you do a long exposure and “paint” the light on the subject waving the light around.
I first started doing this years ago while caving. That was a bit easier since there was not as much distance involved.
Yep, works best with the light source not near the camera, mainly due to it lighting up the fog too much.
