I did get voltage reading whilst cranking but I didn’t feel I could follow the changes in V well just by looking at the display.

Find a DMM that has the ability to record minimum value. Unfortunately, for the price of such DMM, you can typically just buy a dedicated car battery tester that automatically tests for cranking voltage, among many other things.

Yes, they are all very expensive

It’s all relative, I guess. The Uni-T UT61E DMM I got for $35 can record max/min values, but then again, something like Ancel BA101 battery tester is only a few bucks more.
