So, this year the big five 0 is sadly on the horizon for me and I’ve been asked what I’d like. The trouble is by the time you reach this age you have nearly everything you’d like, and I’ve found as I get older I want less anyway - when I was younger I always wanted ‘something’, but now nowhere near so much.
I have given it some thought and I’d like something to pass on so to speak as I don’t have anything really special as such which is mine, sure I have a few things from my Grandfather, and his Grandfather but nothing from me.
I was kinda thinking of a nice light (not that I have a shortage lol) but was thinking a mokume one or something like that, another option is a watch, again though I have a few already that are fairly decent and the one I’d like is a good bit more than I’d like the family to spend (tissot heritage 73). I always wanted an Omega Seamaster, but they are so prohibitively expensive now that ship has long sailed!
What gift did you get or ask for on a ‘big’ birthday? or maybe you can suggest something?
For a keepsake, I made a video of my wife’s parents talking about their life etc to give to the kids. I thought that was a pretty solid gift as a keepsake. For my Five 0 it was all about me;-) Don’t even remember my 60th but Five 0 was spectacular and will always be special for me. Took my motorcycle around all of the great lakes on my way to a group ride tour the Finger Lakes of NY. Spent a few days with old friends in OH on the way home. Wonderful experience that is a keepsake for me in my mind!
LOL! just realized that my big Five 0 was the whole reason I found BLF and started on this journey. Lost my EDC light on that trip. It was a 3 AAA Husky with 7 LEDs. Fit in my pocket and I really liked that light. Had to replace it and that is how I found this site. Later I did find the light and can’t believe how much better any light I got from here is!
Enjoy your big Five 0 no matter what you might buy or not! Hope you are amazed a decade later about how wonderful things have become!
You are not looking for an item, you must have an experience you always wanted, or something you wanted to try. If it requires money to do, you can ask for something related. Skydiving, learning how to do something you wanted to learn like a musical instrument?
Some great suggestions so far, thanks! The Leatherman is something I didn’t think of that can also be engraved and isn’t masses of money.
Another thing I came across was the WT Author No.1973 dive watch. These are handmade in the UK by a microbrand and are limited to 100 serial numbers per colour (though I doubt I’ll be lucky enough to have my birthday day or month left) but I have asked, I only really like the black version.
How about an special day out somewhere you’ve always wanted to see? Or trying an activity you’ve wanted to share with others?
I agree as we get older “things” seem to not mean so much to us anymore.
People/friends/family become much more important.
