Sorry OL, get'n back to the OP, I'm thinking suspending it like you did in a large volume may have helped somewhat, maybe, or could just be other variations - maybe if this was a used emitter and run under high temps already, it may come off easier because the bonding to the emitter PCB was weakened. I know I've had LED's accidentally de-domed before from suspected high temps and pressure from the way it was mounted, either the plastic centering piece or reflector.

Remember we are not working with stuff from a chemical dealer here, but from hardware stores and gas stations. The composition of the gas with it’s additives will vary quite a bit, and at least I don’t know if hardware store grade acetone is cut with other stuff.

Wow, one and half an hour is quite quick.
I only use lighter fluid and drill some holes in the dome with a 0.3mm drill.
You can see forming little bubbles after a few minutes, but it takes some hours before the dome falls off.
I keep my jar in the basement where it is usual below 15°C/59°F, maybe I try putting it on the radiator next time.
My car takes premium unleaded, and in Australia that means 95 Octane. I'm busy mucking about with compact throwers and de-doming was a method I was thinking about trying. Seems I'll have to siphon a bit of fuel from my Honda lol.
Matt, you might try just adding a few ounces to a baby food jar, a pickle jar, or some other small glass container with a sealable lid the next time you’re getting fuel for your car. Beats siphoning hands down!
Keep in mind that the tint drops some 1600-2000K on the average (pure guesstimation as my memory could very well have that wrong) so starting with a higher tint bin than you’d like to end up with is a good idea. Use emitters that you’ve found to be cooler than you like and haven’t been using because of it, try de-doming those and see where the tint falls.
I de-domed a used XM-L T5 today and it ended up resembling a good Xenon bulb from yesteryear. Not bad, a color the eye is accustomed to dealing with so it doesn’t seem odd at all.
Temperature has a lot to do with it. I tried it when it was cold outside and it took forever I ended up bringing it inside after something like six hours. Same gas out of the same container. On a very hot summer day I have had them fall off in under an hour. I use a little crock of some sorts it’s small and shallow and I only put in enough to cover them up plus maybe a half an inch.
I wonder if ethanol has anything to do with it, i assume composition must have some effect, there have been a few reports of people not having a lot of luck with gasoline
33/91 degrees here in Brisbane at the moment (heading 35/95 over the weekend) . Something tells me the weather plus 95 octane could result in some seriously fast de-doming.

Basically, what you’re saying is to put the glass jar, with the emitter and gasoline inside, and place it over a Bunsen burner for the fastest results? J)

I wonder if the fact that I used a big jar with about a quart of gas in it made any difference. The temps are fairly cool here this time of year. It was only 80 degrees in the garage.
The wife won't like me keeping gas in the garage, so I will have to buy a few cool white XM-L2 and do them all at once. Then I can pour the gas in the car's tank when I'm done.
I also wonder if a can of octane booster would work.
Might just add the prescribed amount to the gas for a ~108 Octane reading and see how that works on the emitters. Sure wouldn’t hurt the car any when you were done…
I wonder if the melted domes in the gas will act as a octane booster. I would be really careful the first time you put you foot down after putting this mixture in your gas tank. You may take of really fast.
