Thorfire VG-15

Seems a few people on here have been asked by Thorfire to review their VG-15.

They asked me to do a video review which I agreed to. The C8 they sent me to review was awesome so I had high hopes.

I received the VG-15 last night and I simply dont like it.

Sure it is well made and seems to do ~2.4A on high meaning it’s putting out a fair bit of light but when comparing it against the C8 which is £16 vs £22 the C8 simply beats it. The C8 is bigger but feels more sturdy. The C8 is bigger but has much better throw etc.

I also can NOT get on with the stupid power switch on the bottom. It seems to want to turn itself back on after I’ve turned it off. Maybe I’ve got a faulty tailcap but last night when I was testing it in a field I almost lobbed it into the mud because the damn thing wouldn’t switch off it’d just change mode.

Sure, I’ll do them a video review but they might not be too pleased!

I got that email too, and emailed them back promising a video, but never heard back from them.

Think I dodged the bullet on that one.

Other Thorfire flashlights Ive used are really good, but the VG15 sounds like its not in the same league as their other ones.

The C8 and TG06 are amazing… but sounds like you need to steer clear of the VG15 then…

I’ve got it sat on the desk in my office and it’s just flashed full brightness twice. It’s out of arms reach and I have no idea why it did it!

I fired it up to see if it was okay and i just had to keep jabbing the power button to get the bugger to turn off.

ODD.

Ive had flashlights where shavings were left inside the battery tube or stuck in the driver ring from being milled. Never from Thorfire though.

Maybe theres some metal shavings floating around inside it?

I just checked the tube and all contacts and it all seems fine. I’ll gladly do a video review for them!

I passed it to a work colleague and told him to turn it on and off… first time like a charm. Second time it took about 30 secs to turn it off!

… now it wont turn on at all. this is a piece of poop.

Great review Chrisc!

Looks like I won’t be getting one of them then

I should really be doing a bit of work but I thought I’d have a look and see why this wasn’t working at all. It seems the retaining ring to hold the driver in place had come loose. I poked the driver board with a pencil and you could move it freely.

I’ve tightened it back up and the light works but the switch is still highly annoying.

I was asked to do a video review and they’d send a free coupon. I replied saying I could do a review with photos. So they asked me to do a 5 star review with photos. I said I’d only be prepared to do an honest review. I never did receive that coupon. I don’t like it when manufacturers adopt dishonest practices. Incidentally I did review the C8s after they sent me a free sample, and the review got 5 stars because the light is extremely well made and good value. The VG15 is bound to be more floody with less throw, but more compact. It might be a more general purpose light.

You should be honest in your review, but fair, of course.

I received a VG-15, did the review and it was actually an ok light. The output wasn’t all that great so I removed the stock driver and led, put in a fet+1 and a Nichia 219c…fixed the output issue.

Mine works fine, light is of very high quality, no issues at all. SS bezel, AR coated glass, robust clip, and a lot of power! the moonlight is potentially a little bit too high but that is fine with me.

Sounds like you’ve sorted out your flashlight for the most part. Glad it was just a loose retaining ring.

I love my two thorfire flashlights that I have, and was unhappy to think that some of their other flashlights werent as good quality.

Sounds like you were unlucky to receive one that hadn’t quite been put together properly.

The loose retaining ring sorted out it not powering on at all.

The light still doesn’t like being turned off. It seems to have some random way of turning it off.

You could still give them 5 stars.

Out of 10.

Whoops… This is a major knock against ThorFire. They came in strong with quality lights, but are now resorting to bribing to get positive reviews. Not good business ethics…

I’ve been asked to do a few reviews for them and not once was I asked to give them a good rating. All of the lights I have reviewed have had a high build quality but have been somewhat underpowered.

I personally thought the VG-15 was a really nice light, comparable to Convoys. I replaced the LED & driver with the BLF A6 components and I like it much better. The beam profile is right in the middle between the Convoy S2+ (or BLF A6) and the Convoy S2.

I was also asked to review a ThorFire product and there was never any mention in how I would rate the light. Quite the opposite actually. All ThorFire reps I was in touch with were very interested in technical, market and product feedback so they can improve the light.

From what I can say this is a honest brand and they just want to improve their product with features the pros in the market would want (=us).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again the c8 is awesome. I know of 12 sales of the c8 directly from me. Hell, I’ve seem 7 of the purchased lights and each person is happy.

My vg15 just annoys me.

I’ve sent them a video of what is wrong and if they want to leave it at that then I’ll publish the review.

They might wish to send out a different light to test.

Mine turned up today and i love it, similar to the convoy s8, brighter than the vg10, but with a little less throw and a little more spill due to the op reflector, pulling 2.2 amps, will do a review for them this weekend, S70 turned up too and thats pulling over 5 amps a real beast will do a review for that weekend too for them.
