Thoughts on modding this headlamp to XM-L?

I found this 3AA headlamp at EasyLightBuy.com for $15.05 and think it might make a good mod to XM-L with some Glass Frosting Spray on the lens to make it a more diffuse floody beam. If the stock driver doesn't put out what I'm looking for I'd go with a 3 mode Nangj 1.4A (or perhaps the KD 1.5A version in 2 mode Med & High). Here's the link: http://www.easylightbuy.com/high-power-cree-q3-led-3-modes-headlamp-with-battery-case-back_p689.html

So what do you think? Good plan? Light too junky? I'm after a floody long-runtime headlamp running on AA's. Any better headlamp "host" running 3AA's I should consider?

That's extremely expensive for what it is. The biggest problem I see is the light assemble is fixed so you can't angle it up or down to aim at were you are working.

Typically the XRE ones are the easiest to mod to XML because the reflector requires no mod, but if the pill is hollow, the lens or reflector are plastic or it's glued together you will be in trouble.

Thanks for catching that about the fixed head! I didn't even realize it! Any other recommendations on a moddable decent quality 3AA headlamp?

Hmm, doesn't sound bad. Doesn't seem too floody though. Bit expensive to buy to mod. Which emitter are they referring to as "R3" an XP-E?

Yes it looks like an XPE so the reflector will be a problem if you mod it, but it should have plenty of flood as is.
