Thoughts on Olight SR95 / Tn31

Was looking at the Olight’s clearance sale and rationalising whether I should give the SR95 a go. So I look up some you tube videos on the SR95 light. I must say the throw is quite decent and the spill it puts out does add meat to the meal. Add the overall aesthetics and the no brainer user interface, the SR95 becomes instantly appealing. The setback is of course the customised battery and availability issues in the future. I do like the heft of the torch making heat issues a minimum concern and the weight, manageable.

With this in mind, I am wondering whether it is possible to replicate this in the TN31 or the Supbeam K40, both having superior throw in their class. By replacing the XML in the K40, with the SST90 led, or SBT70 or SBT90 (not sure about its characteristics and performance) will the performance be somewhat similar to the SR95 with good spill? This will eliminate the battery availability issue.

I do know that the TN31 is a tough nut to crack. Will the K40 make it any easier to mod?

Alternatively, any possibility or way to mod the SR95 battery casing in the future once the battery dies?

Are the Olights also sealed in such a way as to be quite hard to take apart the head?

Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

I’ve heard some people say the SR95 is outdated. What makes it outdated besides the battery? If you want pure throw, then it is not the light for you, but the SST-90 should have a lot wider hotspot compared to a pure XML2 thrower, right? It is a lot more usable of an LED for a thrower imo.

The design of the battery part of flashlight is outdated. I have tr-j19 for example and it is quite uncomfortable to carry, if you have hold once a K40/TN31/BTU Shocker etc.

I don't know how a SST90 TN31 would perform in comparison to the SR95, but I like the idea. Been thinking about doing it myself for awhile now because like dangerous said, I don't find the pencil beam very useful most of the time. Now that I have a K50 on the way, I'm probably will do the emitter swap.

Opening up the TN31 wasn't too bad for me. I did like someone recommended and put it in a plastic bag and then in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Then used leather gloves to unscrew the head. It took effort at first. Maybe a couple more minutes in the boiling water would have helped.

I haven't looked to see if the reflector would need to be modded. That could be a deal breaker for me as I wouldn't want to modify it too much.

I’ve always wondered how the SR95 would perform if you swapped out the sst90 with a dedomed xml2, and maybe lower the drive current to a more manageable level.

TN35 Sounds like what you’re looking for…

Or these Eagletac options…

MX25L3 (MT-G2, smaller head than TN35, i.e. less throw)
MX25L4 (SST-90 or SBT-90 or SBT-70)

or wait for this…

I’d actually like to see it in the original SR90… but then again I believe I calculated the Cd/Lm was better (not by much though) on the TK61. So around 600k with the higher current would be pretty close.

You all know this thread was created a year and half a go

Comparing SR95 and K50, the spill definitely seems to be a lot more usable on the SR95. Pure thrower vs floody thrower.
