I recently built a Convoy L6 with a FET driver and XHP70.2. It pretty much does this and surprisingly takes a few minutes to turn into a hand-warmer. That said, I would like to build a thrower next, and I'm having trouble coming up with good hosts or even flashlights that suit my need. I want to hit the shore across the reservoir from the cove that I test my lights in, and my calculations suggest that I should target 400,000 candela for that goal. (actually 360k, but this is BLF, and 400k is such a nice round number besides...)

Obviously we're out of C8 territory, and it looks like that's a bit beyond what I could hope for from a Convoy L2 or heavily modded SMO-reflector L6. I don't want to buy something pre-built that does the job for me. Obviously I'll need a large reflector. If possible, I'd love recommendations that are suitable for an XHP35 HI, but I'm also willing to settle for XP-L HI if doing it with the 35 becomes too pricey. I'd like to avoid the tiny de-domed XP-G2 type of situation, even if it is possibly a quicker route to the candela I desire.

So I guess the main thing I'm looking for is two pieces of information: what kind of reflector size am I going to need (or better, show me how to find that out myself!) and suggestions for hosts/lights in that size range. Thanks in advance

MF-02 might be the cheapest host capable of doing it with XHP35. Too bad that it throws far enough stock, but if this really bothers you, you can just replace its components with your own.

Though a different LED might open some possibilities.
I suggest that you consider SST-40, it’s much better than XP-L HI. Osram Q8WP is a nice option too.

TK61 XHP35HD E4 De-domed is a fun mod. and will do over 400kcd

Hmm. I'm not willing to go with the off-center Osram yet. I'm aware of the MF-02. I was hoping there was something like the Courui D01, but a step up in reflector size.
