Ok, so seeing as the ThruNite TN30 is now $159 for a short time I was considering getting one and selling my TR-J12 and Apex 5T6 and some other lights and just having my TN30 and TN31 to cover most everything. What I want to know is is there anyone who has had all of these lights and can compare beams, mainly looking for pure flood as my TN31 is my thrower now. My J-12 is modded with the 5 mode no strobe or SOS driver from KD so it is brighter now. Again just wondering if the TN30 truly is the “Flood King” as ThruNite claims or if I am better off with what I have.
Nevermind, went ahead and ordered the TN30 anyway, will compare lights when I get it and probably have a big light sale, lol.
The TN30 has bigger/deeper reflectors than most of the chinese clone competition so it’s hardly the “flood king”, not that’s necessarily a bad thing.
I was thinking that and am actually debating cancelling my order because of that. The lights I have now work well and I don’t need to spend $160 and don’t think I’ll get $160 for the lights I would sell after this. Will contemplate more tonight and decide.
Not much else out there has a UI like the TNs though. That is the main reason I took the plunge. Clicking tailcap buttons to cycle through modes to get the one I want is just not as good methinks.
I though, hey I have a SRK, but then though, hey, I often wish it had more modes.
Lately I have been thinking the same 301, keep just a few really nice lights and sell or gift some of the ones I am not so keen on. Works for me ![]()
why dont you get the skyray 9xml for about $70 bux and use that as your flood light?
I agree, and is one of the biggest reasons I did order it, for now, lol. I love the mode selection and just overall feeling of quality that the TN31 has and wouldn’t mind that in my flood light.
Because I already have the TR-J12 and Apex that do a damn good job at flood, I am looking for a higher quality light and I love the ThruNite UI. The 9x Sky Ray may flood more than what I have but in all practicality these flood plenty.
There really isn’t a clone equivalent to the TN30 yet. Its “throwy” beam with UI is still fairly unique.
IMO, the key to being pleased with slightly higher end purchases is to get it if you’re going to use it regularly. No point if it’s going to be a shelf queen, but any daily user returns value.
In any case, we will be set for lumens when the next big storm comes mate ![]()
Another reason I am reconsidering, lol. I do use my flashlight daily but just for walking the dog and more because it’s fun to do so than 100% needed, lol. Honestly my J12 and Apex have been sitting lately as I use my Balder SE-2 and L2P with E1320 NW XM-L drop-in. Decisions, decisions.
If the BTU shocker does have the original TK70 head and good electronics, both the TN30/31 cannot out-flood nor out-throw it. If you want a ‘one size fits all’ light, the TK70/BTU shocker is it.
A smaller and lighter torch will still give you adequate light on days when you want to lighten up. It’s easy on the hands and easily tucked away in your pocket. But a big flood and throw beam brings immense ecstasy. Feels like your money is well spent. I do enjoy having a well made and reliable torch like the thrunite tn30.
Don't have the TR J-12 but here are comparo shots on max for APEX 5T6 and TN30 if it helps:

However if you want pure flood, nothing beats the TM11 in my collection.
I am also evaluating this thought, Trustfire J12 vs TN30. I am not expecting to see more light out of TN30 than 5 led J12 but some longer throw is appealing. Now that TN30 is a 3 led light, I looked if I can find any with deeper reflectors and I saw FandyFire HD2010 3 led lights on DX. They seemed to have deeper cones than my 3T6 light. Have you guys any idea about these 2010s?
You really need a bigger head like the TK70 for significantly more throw. Otherwise these 3x lights with similar size to an average thrower will just have a bigger spot.
IMO, it would be more interesting to makes a couple simple templates to fit 3x throwers through. Use one of them as a handle. You can even get remote tailcap wired together for one switch to turn on all 3.
the tn30 actually throws pretty good…it has 40 000 lux so that puts it up there with decent throwers…it does however have a ton of side flood with that throw…awesome light

From looking and reading it sounds like the TN30 may be more like the J12 than the Apex, which to me is good. I would love a NW J12 but don’t feel like spending ~$50 and risking killing my J12 to change all the LEDs to NW, so if the TN30 is similar it will be an awesome light.
i remember reading a thread on that 3 led hd2010. its underdriven and no where close to as good as the original 2010.
Hmm , thanks. No need to buy one to try then.
