Tom it’s a very light OP reflector, which means it wouldn’t have that much of an impact on flood or output compared to the SMO TN30.
Thrunite’s lumen claims are indeed very close to what they are in reality, but their throw claims are always lower than reality. The 31 2nd gen is 90kcd on the box, but 135kcd measured. The 30 1st gen is 40kcd on the box, but 49kcd measured.
I also noticed that the box throw numbers don’t change between the 1st/2nd/3rd generations, but the lumen numbers do. So my guess is that this would have a throw closer to 60k
Yes - I didn't quote their kcd spec because that is off, but their distance spec was accurate on the TN31, so if you back calculate their quoted distance, it comes out to 45-50 kcd. You could be right though bout the distance spec - if they didn't change it, chances are it's way off. But I'm still not trusting any level of OP - I think it will lose throw, dunno how much though... Any level of OP spreads the light out more, less concentrated, and you need tight concentration for throw. They went to OP for a reason I'm think'n.
I’m guessing since the 2nd gen would have more throw than the 1st gen and the fact that it’s a primarily floody light, they opted for the LOP reflector for the 3rd gen.
Someone please buy this and report back lux numbers.
Surefire won a Patent infringement case ( magnetic selector ring ) against them. The 30 & 31 were their bread & butter. It surprises me they are still trying to market these. Wonder if they have made any other modifications to the form factor to steer clear of the issue.
So if it loses some throw will it flood better with the OP reflector?
I have an XM-L2 version TN31 so the throw of the TN30 is not of great concern to me, in fact if the TN30 could flood even better than it does now even at the expense of some throw I would be stoked!
Does this mean Thrunite aren’t allowed to use magnetic selector rings on their lights anymore?
Yeah OP means more flood and less throw. OP also has a slight decrease in lumens compared with SMO, but it’s so insignificant it generally isn’t mentioned.
i did the same with mine , used progold on both contact plates, screwed them down tight and still had an issue and had to send mine back
i sent a few long emails to thrunite with some concrete photos of lux readings on the “polished” carrier vs the tn31mb sandblasted carrier (the mbs carrier got high lux readings on ceiling bounce by 5-8%)
all i got was a broken engrish response - im curious to see if they are the same carriers or they actually tried something else
I’m using my TN30 daily together with the DRY. But the DRY disappoints, at 1500 lumens on high, is about equal or slightly brighter than TN 30 - 800 lumens settings.
Nonetheless, the DRY is lighter and still very useable, when not comparing. It irks me though for underdelivering. Makes me want to lean towards quality lights.
I can say TN30 top 2 levels is bright and very likeable because of magnetic ring ease of use. Another TN30 2nd Gen. definitely won’t hurt, particularly if the price is right. In fact it is a mighty good idea for me to carry one in each hand in my pre dawn outings. Adds new meaning to brightness from a wide angle pespective.
